Hi Merk, We're sorry you are having these experiences with Sync and this is not the intended behavior. As you know, Roman and his team are here to help and anything you can do to help them narrow down these issues will best help them get resolved. As I've said before, our goal is to have a great free edition of Sync. We want people to be happily using Sync, whether they are a Pro customer or not. Obviously there are some issues that we need to resolve, but sometimes these are complex and need user-provided information to debug them. Since this is an issue that we cannot reproduce in our lab, if you could continue to work with Roman, we will get it fixed. The design intends to introduce users to the full Sync feature set for 30 days so everyone can try it out. When in that period, we badge each feature "Pro" so you are aware which functionality is a paid feature. Nearing the end of the trial period, we provide countdown messages in the notification center that are not intended to be annoying. After the 30 days end, only the free functionality is enabled and syncing of up to 10 folders is supposed to be uninterrupted. In the scenario you describe, you should experience no interruption and the free edition should fit your needs perfectly. Then, over time, if you feel the Pro features would benefit you, you can upgrade. But the free edition does not expire and we've added multiple free features since the launch of Sync 2.0 (like search) and more are coming. -ErikP

Hello Antony...you can do what you're desiring in both Sync 2.0 and 1.4. Are you and your wife's computers using the same identity (Options > My Devices)? If so, this will cause the problem you are describing since the folder will automatically be added in the default folder location. If not, when another device connects to the folder, an option is presented for where to save the folder. Just choose the folder you would like on the other device (not using the default location). If you're running Sync 2.0 and would like to change the path, one way is to disconnect the folder and then re-connect it using the different path. If for some reason this does not work and you want to use the pre-2.0 folder architecture in 2.0, you can create a "classic folder" in Sync and use keys to link them (just like in 1.4). http://help.getsync.com/customer/portal/articles/1901253 -ErikP

Hello everyone, I want to ensure that all those here understand that we’ve been following all your feedback; every post in the forum is read and discussed, so please know that we are listening. We want our teams to participate actively in the forum, but we also make the ask that discussion remains constructive and does not turn hostile. I’d like to provide some additional context around our thinking behind rolling out Sync 2.0’s new pricing model, which has been discussed here. From the start, we did not want to pursue an ad-based model. And our mission is to not require the collection of user information to be used for financial benefit. Indirect monetization models may sometimes seem like a great deal on the surface, but it means you have to give up a part of your life. Unlike many internet companies, with Sync, you are fully in control and the required relationship you have to have with the company is minimal. The free edition of Sync 2.0 does not monetize a user in any way. So the business model we chose was an annual subscription focused on Sync Pro. We chose subscription pricing (over perpetual licenses) so that we can continuously improve the software and offer quicker releases; periodically rolling out new features that will be of value to users. So instead of high-cost entry price points and upgrade costs every 12 to 18 months, then the added cost of premium support agreements, we chose a simple, all-in, per user/per year price. For engaged users of Sync, this will result in significantly lower overall cost than with a pay-per-release model and when a new feature is developed, no matter if it’s free or premium, we will release it. No need to hold it so we can sell you an upgrade. In the end, its up to you to decide if our offerings give you value. The dev team is always working hard to deliver an excellent product. We hope that it does provide unique value and functionality. We want you to be a part of our community and again hope that you stick with us so we can prove this over time. It does not matter if you are a free user of Sync or a customer of Sync Pro, we’re going to be working as hard as we can to give you the best possible private alternative to the public cloud. -Erik

We’ve committed to developing a free version of Sync alongside Pro, and will continue to do so. With Sync 2.0’s free version, there are no limits on folder capacity, nor will there be any performance throttling. 10 active folders is a lot of syncing activity and we feel that those who need more capabilities will benefit much from Sync Pro. 10 folders can be added to Sync and there can be any number of folders enclosed inside that high-level folder, which will all synchronize to devices connected to the folder. We feel that the free version of Sync is a great product that will satisfy the needs of a lot of users. With the functionality/usability enhancements and core engine improvements for 2.0, it is much improved over Sync 1.4.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I just want to clarify that there are no plans for ads in Sync. Just because a good portion of Sync will be free to use does not mean that it will be subsidized by ads. The debate on perpetual software licenses vs software subscriptions is interesting. Some key customer advantages to a subscription model is lower entry prices, no surprise upgrade charges (especially for new OS support), an no add-on to get technical support. With perpetual licenses, in many cases, "pay once" is mostly a myth. It's just less deterministic as to when the upgrade charge will come.

Let me see if I can provide some additional info as I do want to be as forthcoming as possible about what’s happening at BitTorrent. A very detailed feature list will be available when Sync 2.0 is released. We will also be posting an Alpha build to the forum in the not too distant future, which will come with a lot of details. We hope many of you appreciate us providing some information in advance instead of surprising you on release day. Until then, let me add a little more color to the Pro features I alluded to in the blog post: - Access to very large files and folders - today, to sync a folder, you need the capacity on each device to hold the entire contents of the folder. With the Pro edition, you’ll have the option to sync all folder contents or not. If you decide not to sync all the contents, placeholder files will represent the real file in the local filesystem. When you double-click on that placeholder file, it will sync the file on-demand and open it. This will allow you to access folders TBs in size on a lower-capacity device like a laptop. - Controlling ownership and permissions for shared folders - today, if you’re sharing folders with other people, you have the ability to set “read only” or “read & write” access, but once they access the folder, there’s no changing it. With the Pro edition, you’ll be able to change the level of permission at any point in time, designate others as owners of a folder, and revoke a user’s access to future folder updates. - Keeping folders consistent across your devices - today, each of your devices are independent. If someone shares a folder with you and you have a laptop, workstation, phone, and tablet, you have to add that folder four times if you want it on all of your devices. With the Pro edition, you’ll be able to associate all of your devices under a single, fully private, identity. So when you add a folder on once devices, it will be added to all your devices. You’ll have options to configure this behavior. For example, you’ll be able to set any device to sync all contents of all folders, keeping everything you add to Sync automatically available and protected. A nice feature if you have a workstation with a lot of capacity or a NAS box. Also, permissions and licensing will be on a per-user basis, cutting down on the number of configuration steps and share approvals. A topic that’s come up often is about capacity used in Sync compared to the cloud. Whether you use Dropbox or Sync, if the goal is to synchronize files across end-user devices, the same amount of local capacity is consumed whether you use a cloud-based or distributed product. Unlike Sync, with the cloud the files first have to go to their storage before they can be synchronized. We feel this is a serious inefficiency. A beautiful thing about Sync, unlike the cloud, is that is relies very little on us to remain operational. If you want to continue to use a previous version of Sync, feel free. We’ll be putting our development effort into 2.0 and beyond, but older versions on existing platforms should work fine. Our goal is that the free version of Sync continues to improve and if the premium functionality brings you a lot of value, we’d love to have you as a customer. Aside from investing a lot into developing Sync, we’ve also built out a very capable support organization. Many of you know Roman, Nate, and Helen. They lead this effort and premium support is included in Sync Pro, with the goal of even better and faster response times than today. We very much appreciate those who have tested the product, provided feedback, submitted bug reports, and have requested for features to be implemented (and a special thanks to you too GreatMarko).
