  1. Hi,

I have a scary issue with BT Sync: Some files and/or folders are deleted, randomly, by BT Sync. I find out only when I need a file just to discover the folder where it should be is empty, then if I'm lucky I get my file from the sync archive, if more than 30 days have past I can only hope my filehistory has worked. I can't figure out what is happening. I am sharing folders amoung three or four of my computers, R/W permission.

Did it happen to someone else here?

    Thanks,

    Mas73.

  2. OK, so I'll try it.

Standard ADSL is around 1Mbit/s Upload and 7Mbit/s Download. To keep things simple we won't consider it's impossible to use full upload bandwidth, so it would take 7 nodes on the swarm for a new comer downloading in ADSL to download at full speed, more or less.

Download speed with high speed broadband on fiber is 83Mbit/s, about 12 times faster than standard broadband, so now we need (7 nodes x 12)=84 nodes. Modern fiber gives 1Gbit/s download, so that's 144 times faster than standard ADSL so we would need 1008 nodes connected in ADSL to serve one peer connected in fiber at full download speed. Yes, no, maybe?

  3. Hello,

I am (trying to) build a decentralised cloud file sharing system for some of our projects. It would work like that: I give RO keys to members, RW keys to workmates, E-RO keys to generous supporters. In theory, they all become part of a big "swarm" and files are being distributed among all peers. Then, assuming as initial postulat that all computers are on ADSL 2gig broadband (coper line), how many peers do we need to get something that provides a speed equivalent to professional cloud servers like Amazon, Google, Dropbox etc. In other words, say one of the peer is on full speed fibre, how big the swarm must be for that lucky peer to be receiving at full download speed provided by his fiber connection?

    That's for maths geeks,

    Thanks,

    Mas73.

  4. Ouch, that's a big blow in the face for my project. It's also defying the entire torrenting principle. I mean, when I use uTorrent, if the peer who has posted the original file goes offline, I keep downloading/uploading with other peers don't I? So RO peers don't "contribute" to the swarm, they only receive files. A bit useless to use BTsync then, any file server will do. Same for encrypted read-only then, there is no point sending encrypted keys.

  5. Hi, when I say "contribute", it means contribute to the swarm by uploading to other peers, not contribute to the project. They need only have access to the files, not edit them. I have just tried again with a peer as I had all but one peer connected. I shut down the server for a while and transfers kept going. I just started the server again to see if it changes the speed for other peers. I don't understand what happened sooner. If they have RO keys only, it shouldn't change anything to the fact they contribute to the swarm in upload-download?

  6. Hello,

I have an issue with the way I thought computers were going to contribute to the swarm. I have one folder containing about 350 gigs on my server that I am sharing for more than 40 days read-only with 7 peers located all over the world, it's a big video community project and several video editors are working on it. The first of them having joined the swarm already have several gigs on their sides. I thought as the swarm would build up, all the computers would contribute to the overall upload-download and system resiliency. Two days ago the server was shut down for maintenance, I thought "no problem, all the peers keep contributing between them and the latest arrived will keep seeing files downloading, this should be transparent for them". Turns out they contacted me to tell me my server is offline they aren't downloading anymore (they need the files to do their work). Did I miss something with the way the system is working? I gave all of them the same read-only secret requesting approval and sent by email directly from BT sync, so I didn't fiddle with the secret to change its properties. They were all approved from the server and everything was working fine with the server online.

    Thanks,
    Mas73.

  7. Hi,

thanks for the clear answer. I have jailbroken my iPad and it still doesn't allow for background and multitasking, it "only" opens up access to a lot of great apps and tweaks, some of them you wonder why it's not built into the iOS, such as having lower case on your keyboard, but that's another topic. So iPad isn't of any use for a swarm, it's just for having your data with you. I guess android shouldn't have this limitation since it can work in the background, if anyone has tried that it would be very cool to have their story.

    Thanks,

    Mas73.

  9. Hello,

I have a question about how the Syncing is working when using an iPad: is the iPad contributing to the swarm? I mean, once my iPad has finished syncing with my desktop, if I shut down the desktop, is the iPad continue to be part of the swarm as long as the App is running? For example if the iPad keeps running while charging at night.

    Thanks,

    Mas73.

  10. Hello Guys,

A few questions about this latest version:

1-About the swarm: now that peers have to be approved, will they upload from the entire swarm or only the device they are approved on?

2-I have sent secrets that didn't need approval but my peer ended up having to be approved nonetheless  Once approved it worked fine, so it seems we have to approve peers anyway. Missed something here?

3-Can we still make Encrypted RO secrets by changing the first letter? (It's on another thread for the previous version).

    Thanks,

    Mas73.

  11. Hi Nellie4568,

Actually you gave a precise answer to my questions, depite I wasn't that clear apparently, sorry for that but I'm a user not a developper so it seems I didn't use the vocabulary that was most relevant.

1-"Do you want to use your members as additional encrypted file sync/storage?". Yes this is exactly what I want to do, with the precision that our members would be technically anonymous to us, taken from the crowd of our followers, those who subscribe to our newsletter (about 8000), who follow us on Facebook and so on.

2-"Any computer that has an encrypted read-only secret for a folder will contribute to the 'swarm' and upload/sync changes (they just don't have the key to decode and view said files). Same if you add another fully standard computer to the swarm the encrypted read-only users will contribute data to the new user. ". That's really great and exactly what I wanted, in fact it's the all point of asking for contribution. It means these anonymous contributors can help us increase resiliency and sync speed, making our organisation more eficient to serve them better, at no additional cost to them, it's a win-win.

3-"PS you dont need to use the API to create encrypted read-only secrets. " OK, here I missed an episode it seems. On the BT Sync website, for the API it says "API exclusive features-Encryption secret", so I though I had to use the API to be able to give Encrypted read-only secrets. On my BT sync client, I can give two-ways read-write sync secrets, one-ways read-only sync secrets and limited time secrets. How do I give an encrypted read-only secret? Sorry if my question is so basic you think I should have RTFM. Because actually I did read the BTsyncuserguide.pdf and couldn't find anything about this in it.

    Thanks,

    Mas73.

  12. Hello,

I am using BT Sync to develop our Company Self-Hosted "cloud" by distributing folders across the team. We are using full access two-ways secrets. Now, we are a small team of about 10 hard working nice guys. To increase resiliency of our cloud, I would like to ask contribution from anonymous community members. That's all the people who love what we do but don't necessarily buy from us everyday. The idea is: Using the API Encryption secret functionality, we would have some of our folders one-way synced to our community members' computers, that way they would be able to contribute to our work with bytes.

The big question is: When a teammate would have his data synced, would he be using only the 10 teammates' computers with the usual standard secret keys or would he actually benefit from all the anonymous peers' computers so as to increase uploading speed when uploading and in case of computer crash necessitating data reconstruction would he be uploading from all peers at once including anonymous encrypted secrets.

I couldn't find the answer anywhere. I hope I am at the right place to ask that question, or maybe I should move the topic to the developers area?

    Thanks,

    Mas73.
