  1. How do you update sync ? Can I just replace the executable and it will automatically pick up the .sync folder ? Running raspbian on a pi2.
  2. @Moe, interesting. I didn't know that there was a special build for the pi. What is the difference between the "normal" sync build for ARM and this build for the pi ? If you install the ARM version on a pi, are you going to run into trouble at some point ?
  3. @Moe. No I'm not running in configuration mode. But on my notebook, which is not in configuration mode either, I can access the settings. If I were to switch to configuration mode now, does sync lose its settings ? Do the folder connections survive that ? @GreatMarko, I've got no browser extensions at all. It's an unmodified epiphany browser on raspberry pi.
  4. @RomanZ sounds great. I'll set the rescan interval to zero as soon as possible. And disable the logs. What about the other tweaks ? What is necessary to put the hdd to sleep reliably.
  5. Thanks. I had found the menu entry, but thought that the rescan interval was just like a safety net. Sync would rely on a service like inotify and to make sure that all changes are detected, rescan the folder itself eventually. Ok, then I know what to do.
  6. Yes, that's what I did, too. Just use the download and unzip it to get the executable. If you want to execute sync at startup, you could create a cronjob. Tip: There is a nice tool for scheduling tasks and cronjobs. It's called gnome-schedule. You can get it from the standard sources, just use apt-get install and it runs fine on the pi. Extract the download to /home/pi/programs/sync/ And add a job with the command: ./programs/sync/btsync which is run at reboot.
  7. I would like to edit the sync options on my raspberry pi server. Preferences -> advanced -> more options -> a red text is displayed "changing these settings can cause sync to stop working ..." The actual options are not displayed. I reloaded the window. Then restarted sync. Then restarted the pi. Nothing works. I can't even see these options.
  8. The folders I sync are on an external hdd and I worry about its lifetime. I know the folder rescan setting. Per default it is set to 600s=10min. That seems rather short. How does the folder rescan work ? Does it really spin up the disk every ten minutes ? Do I have to worry about hdd lifetimes with the default rescan interval ? What values are you using ? If I set the rescan interval to some absurdly high value, like a day, is there a disadvantage ? The hdd is connected to the server which means that I'm never going to add or edit data on this hdd. The new information is synced onto the server by mobile devices and the notebook. But even if I would edit the folders directly on the server, isn't there a notification service which can alert sync about filesystem changes ? There is inotify for example. But I don't know how that works, maybe it's based on rescans, too.
  9. I got it now. But the solution is rather strange. Connecting the device with the key from my notebook doesn't work. - port 3838 was free - they were both in the same LAN network Connecting the device with my phone worked: I chose connect device on the server and scanned the QR code with my phone. Now notebook and server see each other. They can communicate and send data to each other. Between posting the first question and trying the connection with my phone I made no changes to the network settings. Now I'm synching data between notebook and pi. Works fine. But a folder created on the pi is not showing up on the notebook. Is this normal ? Does it take some time to propagate the information about a new folder ? If this is off-topic, I'm sorry. But it seems to me that a new folder on one of my devices should show up immediately on all others. This is not connected to the port problems, is it ? A new folder created on the notebook shows up on the pi immediately (not even a second delay). A new folder on the pi never shows up on the notebook. Strange.
  10. I've set up sync on my notebook and now need to link all my devices. Smartphone and tablet worked directly. The server doesn't. All those devices are connected to the same router, an AVM FritzBox. The laptop, phone and tablet via WLAN, the server via LAN. I copied the key from the notebook (manually link desktop device) and pasted it under manual connection on the server. It says that the linking process could take up to 60 seconds, I've waited about 5 minutes. They don't find each other. I tried connecting the Notebook via LAN, too. Doesn't help. Then I searched the forums and found this help page: http://help.getsync.com/customer/en/portal/articles/1953387-what-ports-and-protocols-are-used-by-sync-?b_id=3895 Apparently sync uses the port 3838 to discover peers. I tried to open this port but still, the devices don't find each other. Is there another port that I should try ? What should I do ?
  11. I have a similar problem. The connection of pi and notebook doesn't work. What ports did you open ?
  12. Way too much overhead. If there's only the API, I'll just ssh on my server and use rsync to get the files. Well thanks for the advice, but I still think it's outragious that you have to hack together a solution to get a basic feature put of CROSS PLATFORM SOFTWARE. Not your fault, I don't want to sound ungrateful. The api really is good advice.
  13. Sync is prominently advertised as cross platform. This is wrong: The most important feature of pro, selective sync, is not available on Linux. It doesn't say so on the website. Despite this shock, I decided to buy pro. The 2.2 release has given me confidence in your company and the features of pro (shared id for "my devices") are amazing. The way I see it, the promise of cross platform sync is unfulfilled. Please don't release a 3.x version as a paid upgrade with true platform independency. Right now the website is deceptive, you need to clarify the absence of selective sync on a major platform. But if you implement it in the future that would be fine by me. If you paywall a feature which is prominently promised right now, I would abandon sync.
  14. I've long considered the pros and cons of sync and finally decided to buy pro. Your company has gained my trust with the 2.2 release. You listened to the community: a new business model and the removed ten folder limit. Moreover sync is simply amazing. Even without the selective sync on linux I could justify the purchase. But I would like to emphasize: You need to redesign your website. Sync is NOT CROSS PLATFORM. And I would like to say that I would really appreciate this feature on Linux. I think that an improved web-ui would be the way to go. Then we could even sync selectively on headless servers. I would be severely shocked if this update would come as the future 3.x version. You promise cross platform support and selective sync with pro. If this would be done, I would instantly abandon sync. Please don't make this happen
  15. The support has answered the question: Eldrin was right: Ten identities, unlimited devices under one identity. "If you want to buy Sync for Personal purposes you can activate Pro personal license on up to 10 devices running Sync under different identities. It means 10 concurrent devices with different identities but with the same license ID it is a new feature of Sync 2.2 .To these independent devices you can link others via "My devices" mode." And the license doesn't void after 10 activations: "The Pro license will not void if you reinstall the OS ten times. It means you can apply it on up to 10 devices at the same time under different identities. You can unlink your devices and link them again even 20 times but our system can see the number of applied license id under different devices. For example if you have 10 devices and you apply this license on all of them then you reinstall the OS on one of them after you can apply this license again." I wouldn't want to get this out of context. If anyone is interested in the full conversation (support ticket and answer) I will post it.
  16. Apparently selective sync is unavailable on Linux, even in the pro version. How do I connect a Linux laptop to my sync network without flooding the ssd ? I would like to sync documents, pictures, movies and music. The notebook has 256GB. No way this is going to fit. Even if I split the movies folder in half, its twice as big as the ssd. How do you do this ? Do you use Linux at all ? Do you use sync for huge files ? Without selective sync, the entire use case of a private cloud for huge files becomes impossible.
  17. WHAT ? No selective sync on Linux ? You never say this on the website. There's platform independent, runs everywhere and buy pro for selective sync everywhere. But nowhere you clarify that Linux is unsupported. How would I like to see this implemented ? Well a better web gui would be great. You could click on a folder and see the file structure in the web gui with annotations for local and remote copies and status bars for sync progress. A hierarchy for all folders and files. Light gray for remote copy, normal color for local copy. Light gray with progressbar for sync in progress. Context menu for options. If you don't want to expand the web gui, I would like to see a unified app for windows and linux, maybe Qt ? If you don't plan to do either in the near future, at least a console utility would be good. sync ls sync cd sync get sync remove //remote rm // local I still can't believe this is true. I was about to buy pro (see my other thread with the last question regarding licensing) but now I wonder why, Honestly, selective sync is the killer feature, the rest is just comfort. How could you release version 2.2 without basic functionality on a major platform. Why don't you clarify this on the website. I feel deceived. What do you mean by that ? Surely Linux is more open than windows ? It is definitely more open than Mac OS ! And certainly more deceloper friendly. I'm sorry but fhis seems like an excuse. Instead of the dedicated windows app, you should have created a proper web gui
  18. So far I've been using the free version, which is a rather limited experience. Now I would like to buy pro. Let's face it: The reason for pro is selective sync. Better management of folder rights and the common certificate for "my devices" are very convenient, but I could do without them. I've been using an external usb drive for sync. The stick is connected to sync on my laptop. Like a portable network storage which is then synced with all the devices. In the background there is a raspi 2 with the exact same stick to keep the cloud running when the laptop is switched off. This setup is inconvenient. I have to shutdown sync before removing the stick. Storage space is limited. But the notebook runs on an ssd, no room for my cloud data. Now I've finally run out of space. The stick is full and sync has worked beautifully so far. I would like to expand my network. Obviously the way to go is a personal pro license. I would hook the pi up to an external hdd and use selective sync on the notebook to keep the ssd from overflowing. Unfortunately there is no selective sync on Linux. I'm shocked. You really don't make this clear. Instead there are slogans like "runs on all platforms" and the promise of selective sync with pro. I actually found this limitation in a forum thread, not on your help pages. There is no mention of linux limitations anywhere on the pro information page ! Is there any way to get my setup working ? Please don't advise me to split everything into small folders. I would like to have one folder for documents, pictures, music, movies and work each. And I won't install windows. I've collected some links : Comparison of 2.2 vs 1.4 http://help.getsync.com/customer/en/portal/articles/1902649-sync-2-2-as-compared-to-sync-1-4 Promised three sync modes, no mention of linux restrictions. Comparison of free vs pro http://help.getsync.com/customer/en/portal/articles/2117793-compare-sync-free-and-sync-pro-ver-2-2- Promised selective sync, no mention of linux restrictions. Buy it https://www.getsync.com/intl/de/buy/pricing Same as above. This is a huge disappointment. How are we even supposed to use linux without selective sync. I just don't have the space for all that data on my laptop. And frankly, I think that your website is deceptive. You should add asterisks to every mention of selective sync and say NOT ON LINUX.
  19. I'm very interested in this, too. Since you can only activate 10 devices with a personal Pro license, I would like to know wether a dead and unlinked device still counts as one of those activations. How can I reclaim an activation ? Or rather: What happens if I run out of activations because my profile is cluttered by unused devices. For example: hdd crash -> complete reinstallation + new activation. If this happens ten times, is the pro license then void ?
  20. I'm already using a pi. But another node in the network would increase reliability. I'll probably use the nas on the fritzbox for additional backup. Something like an rsync cronjob or attic. Thanks for the good advice, the pi is great.
  21. You disappointed me gravely with the subscription business model and the broken promise of retaining 1.4 functionality (10 folder limit). The 2.2 release has renewed my faith in this company. I look forward to buying pro. There is just a minor issue I would like to clarify, I posted my question on the forum. I won't ask it here, since I don't want to steer the thread off-topic. Thank you for listening to the community.
  22. I would like to buy sync pro but there is one remaining question: It says on the help page that the pro version can be activated on ten devices. Does that mean on ten concurrent or on ten consecutive devices. Lets assume I would have one server for sync. If I reinstall Linux on this server ten times and activate sync each time, is my pro license then void ? Or can I reclaim licenses from unused installations ? How does this work, how are the used devices detected ?
  23. Is it possible to use sync with the NAS of a FritzBox ? I will be getting the 7490 in October (from my provider - finally fiber is available where I live). It would be great if I could add the FritzNas to my sync network. Does anyone here have experience with that ?
  24. I would like to use a syncignore file to ignore everything except .7z files. How can I do that ?
