  1. Jdrch, Sadly, it looks like my Windows 10 can't run Resilio Sync as a Windows Service. When I installed Windows, I did something unusual and changed the User Folder into my personal name instead of the first 4 letters of my email. I did this because I didn't want my User Folder to be labeled as "mich" (say my email is Michael42@gmail.com). So, via the Registry I changed the User Folder to my name, Michael. I guess Resilio Sync doesn't know how to handle this. It won't accept my personal name as my username. I tried tons of variations but it won't work. The only thing it will accept is the original email. But when I use my original email, it then creates a new User Folder called mich. Oh well. I tried. Maybe Resilio reads this thread some day and fixes this. Thanks for your help. I appreciate it.
  2. eltopo, Actually, I got it to work! It looks like you have to install the configuration file before you add folders. If you add the configuration file as the last step, then you have to go into every single folder and check-mark "Use predefined hosts". (It doesn't matter if you restart Resilio Sync.) So, for other people who encounter this problem, make sure you change the sync.conf before you start adding your synced folders.
  3. Isn't it "folder_defaults.known_hosts"? folder_defaults.known_hosts will only set the known hosts after you check the option "Use predefined hosts". In other words, only once you check-mark "Use predefined hosts", those hosts IP addresses will be set. I would not prefer to open the Preferences for every folder of the 50 I have synced and check-mark "Use predefined hosts". Did you go thru this page? Yep. Those are the first and only 2 web pages I consulted. Is there a web page that lists all possible commands that can be used in the Resilio Sync configuration file?
  4. Thanks for the info! Sounds like I'm going to run it as a Windows service. It seems like it makes everything easier.
  5. I think I spent a few hours just looking for how to set the predefined host file to True. I think I tried every variation like "folder_defaults.predefined_hosts" : true. I want to check-mark the "Use Predefined Hosts" option in a Folder's Preferences. Anybody know how to do this via the sync.conf file? Also, if there is a list of all possible variables that can be defined, that would be great too. I can't believe this was no included in the help files.
  6. Say I have my NAS and PC both on a VPN. They have specific local IP addresses which I add as predefined hosts. But, what happens when I turn the VPN off? Their local IP addresses change. Should I also add these addresses as predefined hosts? Or, should I manually change the local IP addresses so that the local IP addresses are the same whether the VPN is turned on or off?
  7. I read that it's best to install all the synced folders and files to the NAS first. Then, install Resilio Sync and make the NAS the owner of the folders and files. How do I then sync the folders and files to the PC? As stated in the literature, the NAS sees identical folders and files on the PC and makes a duplicate folder say Folder (1). Is there a way to tell Resilio Sync that it should sync with Folder, instead of creating a duplicate Folder (1)? My second question is should I make the PC an owner or simply have read/write privileges? In other words, does it make a difference? I can always just access the NAS in order to give privileges to other devices, no? When would I need to use the PC to give privileges to other devices?
  8. I read about the difference. If you run Resilio Sync as a Windows Service, it just runs automatically. You also can only make adjustments via the web browser instead of a dedicated GUI. But, does that matter? I would think that running it via Windows Service would be more efficient. Further, since the web browser UI is the same as the GUI in terms of features, is there a reason not to run Resilio Sync as a Windows Service?
  9. I'll be really honest with you. I did not understand one thing you said from sentence #1. I must be really computer illiterate. Let me try to break your sentences down. The administrator is me, right? So, I think you meant in the 1st sentence, the programmers at Resilio Sync has considered that I know which names and labels are used for each device. Then, in the 2nd sentence, you said things get complicated when synced devices are between something internal on my network like my home computer and an unknown device that is located at another home or office. Hmm...why would I sync my home computer to an unknown device somewhere outside my home? Why would it get complicated if two identically named devices becomes synced? Couldn't you display the IP address next to the device or have the IP address blink open like an InfoTip? Couldn't you just do that? Your last sentence was hardest for me. What is the "input" and doesn't a unique key already get generated? I still don't understand why we need Identities and why they can't be changed later.... I've always found Resilio Sync so hard to understand.
  10. When I install Resilio Sync on my devices, it always asks for the Device Name and the Identity. I assumed that this was a method to identify the device and the Identity was a method to identify the user. But, what's strange is that when I install Resilio Sync on my second device, it will ask the same thing. The Device Name and Identity. You can input a different Identity for the second device or you can put in the same name. So, if Device #1 has its own Device Name and Identity and Device #2 has its own Device Name and Identity, what is the purpose of the Identity? You can make them the same or different. It doesn't seem to matter. What is the point of it? Why not just create one Identity to log into the "sync" account or don't even use an Identity at all? This really puzzled me about Resilio Sync.
  11. Thanks. I had posted these questions for a few days and I got no response so I created individualized support tickets. Do you want me to post the answers here so others can learn?
  12. Hi, Everyone, I hope someone can help someone who's kinda' new to this. I know it may sound stupid but I'm a little clueless with networking stuff. I would be very grateful for any assistance. I have two basic questions. One is about predefined hosts and the other is about the use of VPN's with Resilio Sync. Question #1: Is using predefined hosts the safest and fastest method of syncing between two remote computers? It appears that using predefined hosts is the safest method of syncing files between two remote places (let's say my home and my old computer at my parent's home). Is that correct? Also, is using predefined hosts the FASTEST method of syncing my files? It appears not to be the case. Whenever I use the tracker or relay option, syncing seems to be a lot faster. I checked all my firewall and port settings. They seem to be all correctly set up. Are predefined hosts the fastest method? And what common mistakes do people make when they set things up that prevent it from being the fastest connection? Question #2: If I set up a VPN network to connect the computer at my home and the computer at my parent's house so everything acts like they are on the same network, is Resilio Sync necessary? At my parent's house, I had set up a NAS on their network. If I kept all my personal folders and files on the NAS, couldn't I simply access all my files via the VPN network whether I'm at my home or my parent's house? Thanks in advance for any guidance people can give me. I've been toying around with Resilio Sync for a while and I'm not getting the hang out of it.
  13. Say I have a folder labeled Folder 1 on my remote Computer 1. And I synced this folder on a remote NAS to a Folder labeled Folder 1 on a NAS. I only want to sync Folder 1 on my remote Computer 1. However, the remote NAS also syncs with several folders on Computer 2. I don't want Computer 1 to sync with any files on Computer 2. One way is choose Selective Sync on Computer 1 for all the Computer 2 placeholders folders that show up on Computer 1's Resilio Sync Folder Section. Similarly, I would need to do the same exact thing when all of Computer 1 placeholder folders that show up on Computer 2's Resilio Sync Folder Section from Computer 1. But I hate all those placefolder folders on my computers. So, if I simply just disconnect Computer 1, it won't receive any folders in its destination folder, right? However, it will still continue to sync the folder shared between Computer 1 and Folder 1, right?
  14. This is an old post but I think this would be a better solution. Just use Resilio Sync as usual without worrying about the Archive. It's another worry in your busy life. But also just use a backup utility program which you probably are using anyway, right? You probably backup every day and keep the last 7 days, right? What you're looking for probably doesn't exist because it would take human-level AI (maybe not that advanced but a lot of conditions). Sync as usual only when very special situations arise.
  15. I don't remember exactly what happened but I was trying to create a copy of a folder (called Original) on a remote desktop to my NAS (folder called Original was created) by syncing the two devices, I unlinked the devices before they were fully synced I think. Then I linked the devices again. But instead of those two Original folders syncing, on my remote desktop, a new folder was created called Original (1). What should I do in this situation. It was a very large folder. 1. What usually happens in a situation like this? It seems like I'm missing some files in all the folders. In other words, some files which are in the Nas's folder called Original are in the remote desktop folder called Original and some files are in Original (1). But mostly my NAS's Original folder matches with the remote desktop's folder called Original (1). The remote desktop's Original and Original (1) are not the same. Desktop Original seems to have the smaller, older files. 2. Second, how do I rename the folder on my remote desktop from Original (1) back to Original? I was going to just move all the files that are missing in Original (1) from Original, and then erase the folder called Original and rename Original (1) to Original. Do I then unlink the devices again and then try to sync with the folder called now called Original? I know this is really confusing but I'm assuming this happened to a lot of you guys out there. How did you deal with it when you've got folders with like 100,000 files?
  16. What is the difference between a peer and a device? It appears to me that a device is a desktop, laptop, smartphone, etc. But isn't that what a peer is as well? A peer seems to be the owner of the device attached to this P2P network. So you can be the peer to the computer at work and you can be the peer at the computer at home. So, when you connect them, there are two devices and two peers? Won't they always be the same? I've actually searched the forums and the internet for this question but I couldn't find anything. I guess the question is so simple that nobody even has asked this. What is the difference between a peer and a device?
