  1. Applies to: BTSync v.2.3.3 (296) Windows 7, 8/8.1, Windows 10 -- Home and Professional. BTSync prompts to install as a service -- but doesn't follow Windows service account conventions as other programs do, (IIS, MySQL, SQL Server, etc). Issues: Software Defect: Some installations, (like BitTorrent Sync), will not install the Windows Service -- unless a regular user account is specified. Expected Behavior: Should automatically provide the correct NT Service account identity, or at least allow the user too. Security Issue: The user is forced to create another regular user account, [which as a best practice, should never be done]. Workaround: After the Appropriate Service Account is specified, this temporary user account should be deleted. References Windows does not use "Service Accounts" -- in the Linux sense, but rather "Virtual Accounts" and "Managed Service Accounts, (for machines participating in an LDAP environment. Service Account Naming Convention: By Naming Convention, it appears that the virtual accounts should follow the form, "Command Name" - [Extension] + "svc" "btsync.exe" becomes "NT Service\btsyncsvc" Creating the Virtual "NT Service" Account: Open up the Local Services snap-in, "services.msc" Navigate to the desired service, (btsync), right-click "Properties". Select the "Log On" tab. Select the option to specify a user. Enter the "Conventional" service name, described above: (without quotes). NT Service\btsyncsvc REMOVE the passwords. Save - Apply Restart the Service. Setting Folder Permissions: Set folder permissions -- using the full account name: "NT Service\btsyncsvc", (using quotes may or may not be required depending on the context ...) ... It is not necessary for the btsyncsvc to have execute permissions, so remove if you like -- otherwise, full control. Error - Service Fails to Start due to "No Mapping Between Account Names and Security IDs": For example, this error will occur if you specify, "NT Service\btsync" rather than "NT Service\btsyncsvc" ... The following command will return the list of current service account names. Using PowerShell, (PS), Verify the list against the one you have specified to use for "Log On": PS > get-service | foreach {Write-Host NT Service\$($_.Name)} Error - Service Fails to Start because the Account has not been Granted Log On as a Service Permissions: This error can occur if you have specified the incorrect "Conventional Name", or if the permissions really are missing -- though will be automatically assigned if the correct convention is used. In Windows 10 Home, the User will not be able to use the local security policy snap-in to configure this, (secpol.msc) -- and must be done manually, through PowerShell, or other utility. PowerShell Scripts: To fix this, it is possible to use PowerShell. "Grant-Log-on-as-a-service PowerShell Script, from Technet Gallery": If PowerShell reports an "ExecutionPolicy Error", it may be necessary to change the ExecutionPolicy: PS > Set-ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned ... May Result in a signing error -- And then changed to: PS > Set-ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted And then use the Script to assign the permission: PS > .".\Add Account To LogonAsService.ps1" "NT Service\btsyncsvc" Reset the ExecutionPolicy if desired: PS > Set-ExecutionPolicy Restricted Hope this Helps!
  2. Sync Version: 2.2.7 OSX Version 10.11.2 I'm trying to sync across a cluster of mac mini servers without success. Ultimately, I'll run it via a launchd daemon, but I'd like to verify it works within the terminal. I've followed the instructions here to run in configuration mode without success. No logs are generated and no sync occurs. The below output is consistent regardless of whether or not I use '--config' or the how settings are configured. I've come across some posts in older versions that says it's not supported, but the URL above would seem to imply differently. As a side, but perhaps related, note, the command line options don't seem to work at all, e.g., '--generate-secret' does nothing. The docs don't indicate that it's restricted to Linux. Please note that when running the GUI remotely via RemoteDesktop, it works perfectly across the cluster. $ ~/Applications/BitTorrent\ Sync.app/Contents/MacOS/BitTorrent\ Sync --config ~/btsync.conf Jan 2 13:39:36 BitTorrent Sync[6731] <Error>: Set a breakpoint at CGSLogError to catch errors as they are logged.Jan 2 13:39:36 BitTorrent Sync[6731] <Error>: This user is not allowed access to the window system right now._RegisterApplication(), FAILED TO establish the default connection to the WindowServer, _CGSDefaultConnection() is NULL.Jan 2 13:39:36 BitTorrent Sync[6731] <Warning>: CGSConnectionByID: 0 is not a valid connection ID.Jan 2 13:39:36 BitTorrent Sync[6731] <Warning>: CGSConnectionByID: 0 is not a valid connection ID.Jan 2 13:39:36 BitTorrent Sync[6731] <Warning>: CGSConnectionByID: 0 is not a valid connection ID.Jan 2 13:39:36 BitTorrent Sync[6731] <Warning>: CGSConnectionByID: 0 is not a valid connection ID.Jan 2 13:39:36 BitTorrent Sync[6731] <Warning>: CGSConnectionByID: 0 is not a valid connection ID.Jan 2 13:39:36 BitTorrent Sync[6731] <Warning>: CGSConnectionByID: 0 is not a valid connection ID.Jan 2 13:39:36 BitTorrent Sync[6731] <Warning>: Invalid Connection ID 0Jan 2 13:39:36 BitTorrent Sync[6731] <Warning>: CGSConnectionByID: 0 is not a valid connection ID.Jan 2 13:39:36 BitTorrent Sync[6731] <Warning>: CGSConnectionByID: 0 is not a valid connection ID.Jan 2 13:39:36 BitTorrent Sync[6731] <Warning>: CGSConnectionByID: 0 is not a valid connection ID.2016-01-02 13:39:36.814 BitTorrent Sync[6731:336762] CFPasteboardRef CFPasteboardCreate(CFAllocatorRef, CFStringRef) : failed to create global data2016-01-02 13:39:36.815 BitTorrent Sync[6731:336762] CFPasteboardRef CFPasteboardCreate(CFAllocatorRef, CFStringRef) : failed to create global data2016-01-02 13:39:36.815 BitTorrent Sync[6731:336762] CFPasteboardRef CFPasteboardCreate(CFAllocatorRef, CFStringRef) : failed to create global data2016-01-02 13:39:36.816 BitTorrent Sync[6731:336762] CFPasteboardRef CFPasteboardCreate(CFAllocatorRef, CFStringRef) : failed to create global dataJan 2 13:39:36 BitTorrent Sync[6731] <Warning>: CGSConnectionByID: 0 is not a valid connection ID.Jan 2 13:39:36 BitTorrent Sync[6731] <Warning>: CGSConnectionByID: 0 is not a valid connection ID.
  3. After installing Bittorent sync on mac running Yosimite 10.10.3 the Sync window is completely blank except for the black bar across the top. I have uninstalled, reinstalled, rebooted, uninstalled/reinstalled again...still nothing shows up. I installed this on my PC and all is well. Anyone else have any similar issues? I've also created a brand new account on my mac in case its something to do with the account and I get the same result. Thanks for helping!
  4. I use Sync 2.0 on my laptop. I want to run a headless Sync 2.0 server instance on my ubuntu vserver. Therefore I created a configuration file for my btsync instance in /etc/btsync/instance.conf. In instance.conf I can define all the shared_folders. To sync them with my laptop I have to set a secret for each directory to sync. How can I find out the secret key for this configuration parameter in the Sync 2.0 App for Mac? I can only get a weblink or an QR-Code. That does not work as a secret parameter. Any tipps?
  5. Hi. I'm having trouble with figuring out if its possible to move the sync log file to another location? My System won't spin down the harddrives because of this file, and i wish to place it on another mount point. (USB stick)
  6. I've set up a linux server with bittorrent sync. The folders are on an external HDD drive. After almost 24h it finally finished indexing - yes the server is slow - but the HDD still doesn't spin down. This is a little troubling, I'm sure the external HDD is not supposed to run non-stop. Apparently this is connected to the indexing intervals. Sync will check the folder for changes every 10 minutes and that keeps the HDD from spinning down. I need to adjust this indexing interval. This seemed perfect: http://help.getsync.com/customer/portal/articles/1570790-can-i-change-how-often-sync-checks-for-file-changes- Unfortunately in my advanced settings there is no option to change the interval (linux web ui). I've read that the interval can also be set by a config file which is given to the executable via the --config flag. Great, but I still need to get that config file. I dumped a sample config file, which would need to be adapted, but before I do that, I have two questions : 1. Is it possible to get the "current" config file ? Which contains the configuration, that btsync uses right now, eg correct folders, correct ports, correct user-name ? I'm afraid that passing a config file will mess up the folders that are already indexed. It would be a shame if another 24h were lost on that. 2. If the "current" config file is not available, if I have to adjust the sample config, what do I need to change ? Which settings are important and which are dangerous ? I tried to find a tutorial which tells me where to be careful, but so far, I haven't found it.
  7. Hello I have bittorrent sync with the package manager on my raspberry pi installed. I would like to set the option limit sending rate to [kB/s] 10. I can set it, but when I open the options again to check my changes, they are lost. The following things I have tried. 1. apt-get update -> no changes (current Version is 1.4.83) 2. the service is running with the debconf-default.conf. Enhanced the right on the file chmod 666. The file is stored /etc/btsync/debconf-default.conf 3. With dpkg-reconfigure: I have not found the option to set it on. What do I wrong? Thanks. jack
  8. Hi! One of the reasons I use BitTorrent Sync is synchronizing of games' saves between different computers. The problem is that some games perform saving very often, so. because of real time synchronization BitTorrent Sync is always busy with synchronizing of that files. Is it possible to switch off real time synchronization and use periodical one instead? There is an option "folder_rescan_interval" in Additional settings, but it seems that it does not influence the real time synchronization, it just performs folder rescan every 10 minutes by default.
  9. Hi BitTorrent Developers, since I use btsync also for the internal synchronisation of internal files in my servers, I setup some closed configuration, but now I'm wondering, if this is really possible. Look at this configuration file: //!/usr/lib/btsync/btsync-daemon --nodaemon --config // // This btsync instance provides sync services for // all common files in the YeaSoft Server Grid // { "device_name" : "tuxpoldo - Server Sync Instance", "storage_path" : "/var/lib/btsync-serversync", "listening_port" : 11076, "check_for_updates" : false, "use_upnp" : false, "download_limit" : 0, "upload_limit" : 0, "webui" : {}, "shared_folders" : [ { "secret" : "blahblahblah", "dir" : "/mnt/data/tftproot/yeaboot/", "use_relay_server" : false, "use_tracker" : false, "use_dht" : false, "search_lan" : true, "use_sync_trash" : true, "known_hosts" : [ "10.65.4.1:11076", "10.65.0.16:11076", "10.65.18.1:11076" ] } ] } I would expect btsync to do nothing with PNP and not to try to reach any external system. If I look to the log file, I see the following strange things: [20130428 14:15:58] Loading config file version 1.0.134 [20130428 14:15:59] Got 2 relay ips [20130428 14:15:59] Server ip 67.215.229.106:3000 [20130428 14:15:59] Server ip 67.215.231.242:3000 [20130428 14:16:10] NAT-PMP: Unable to map port with NAT-PMP. Question: Why does btsync search for relay servers if I disabled the use of relay servers? Why does btsync try to do any PNP stuff? In my opinion these are serious security flaws that may decrease the trust of users in btsync...
  10. I dumped the sample configuration, and it says this: // Advanced preferences can be added to config file. // Info is available in BitTorrent Sync User Guide. So I pulled the options from the guide, and attempted to add them to the config file (using the ppa from here). I'm no JSON expert, but I fail to see where I'm going wrong: { "pid_file" : ".btsync.pid", "storage_path" : ".btsync", "listening_port" : 0, "check_for_updates" : true, "use_upnp" : true, "download_limit" : 0, "upload_limit" : 0, “disk_low_priority” : true, “lan_encrypt_data” : false, “lan_use_tcp” : true, “rate_limit_local_peers” : false, "webui" : { "listen" : "127.0.0.1:9999" } } When starting with those options I get the following error: Error while parsing config file: Unexpected end of config file (are you missing '}') ? If I delete the 4 "advanced" options, it works again. Are they supposed to go in their own section? If so, what does that look like? TIA, Peter
