Sync deleted my files... be careful.

Sync deleted a bunch of my files. Because of this, I'm switching to <munched by admin - considered spam> (a direct DropBox competitor).

I realize that Sync is in Alpha, but it is public. I also turned off the "sync trash" or whatever it is called. I don't want to keep a bunch of old files that I deleted. It seemed to work very well overall for a time. However, one day as I was working, I noticed lots of notifications popping up from Sync. I started looking and it was deleting all my files inside a particular folder, as well as several subfolders, etc.

Though the documentation says all files deleted (when the sync trash is turned off) will go to the trash, only a few were there. I think that perhaps it had deleted the rest of the files/folders previously, and I'd since emptied the trash without realizing all that was in there.

Luckily I use BackBlaze to backup everything. I was able to download that folder and it's sub-folders and restore all the files. I contacted support including logs for them to see what had happened. I updated to version 1.0.32 and tried again. Promptly, it started deleting those same files and folders again. I uninstalled completely and restored the files again fearing there might be more files that were deleted that I wasn't aware of and not wanting to add to that list. Support got back to me after about a week and said "try version 1.0.32" which I'd already done.

I was very conflicted about if I should try to tinker with it. I'd hoped it would be a "just works" replacement for LiveMesh, and it very much seemed to be... until it started deleting my files. I'd just assumed that cloud-based solutions like DropBox were going to cost me more than I wanted to pay (I have quite a bit of data I need synced), so I'd ignored them. Then a friend clued me in to <munched by admin - considered spam> that lets you get 5GB free space for each person you refer that installs the desktop app. I tried that out and was able to get enough space that I can now sync all my files to the cloud, and to both of my computers (plus there's a mobile app, etc). It's basically just DropBox, with a lot more free space, if you use the referral program.

Just thought I'd let people know, in case they have the same problem, or don't want to risk their files getting deleted.

My apologies. I did genuinely want to warn people and share the alternative I've settled on. Which is currently running a referral program that gives people a unique opportunity. With your permission, I'll edit my post and add "clean" links for their reference. Or leave it as-is, if you prefer.

I honestly don't see how you can blame a program for settings that you've given it to run on. This post is quite literally tantamount to blaming Microsoft for you as the end user enabling the "Don't move files to the Recycle Bin. Remove files immediately when deleted." option under Windows.

That aside, I've yet to experience this issue. I've only just (right now) updated my client to the newest version (I have auto updated disabled). So I'm really not sure why you're experiencing issues. However, I can tell you that until BTSync is out of beta you should NOT disable the Sync trash option.
