Btsync Specifically Skipping Certain Files (Not In .syncignore) And Not Completing Syncs!

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I've been using BTSync to sync my desktop and laptop without having to mount volumes and that jazz. It's working fine except that the program refuses to sync certain files! I have opened .SyncIgnore on both my desktop and laptop (both Macs) to confirm, but they still are in the queue for syncing.

I have attached a screenshot of the window showing which files are not syncing. Just note that both the Applications folder, which has a difference of more than a dozen gigabytes, and the Music folder, which just needs to sync the iTunes library file and few other tiny files, have remained in queue for weeks without any transfer occurring. Upload and download rate are almost always at 0. This is with applications such as iTunes closed to avoid conflict during sync.

Any idea as to how to get the computers syncing? (BTSync 1.3.94)

You're sure that no programs are attempting to access any of those files?

If lsof (or whatever, if any, the OS/X equivalent is) and looking for that filename should show you.

If they're in use, they won't be synced. I see similar behaviour when I attempt to sync two Calibre servers.

On re-reading it, I can see you've mentioned that you've closed iTunes, so you can probably disregard that.

However, it's also worth checking the logs on the receiving device. I've (rarely) had an issue that required deleting the problem file on the recipient device (including the !sync file for partial syncs)

When I think about it, it's been a long time since I saw that happen, however I don't have any OS/X devices.

I just noticed that Console does give an error message for BitTorrent Sync:

"BitTorrent Sync: Failed to notify due to missing registration, queue and reregister"

This however seems to be an issue with Growl and not connected to the syncing issue...

*New update*

Using Kaleidoscope I identified even more incongruencies between the two machines. One has issues with keeping old versions of apps; the other refuses to delete files that have been deleted on the other machine. In other words, BTSync is simply NOT SYNCING dozens of directories in the iTunes folder.

Also, the Applications folder was getting a bit out of hand with the indexing (500,000+!!), and to make sure that this giant queue wasn't the source of error, I removed it from my syncing list. This did nothing to improve the problem of the Music directory not syncing.

iTunes contains some files that it keeps open constantly (in our tests that were iTunes Library Genius.itdb, .iTunes Preferences.plist). I suspect that some other files might be locked in your case as well.

I suggest ignoring iTunes service files from Sync by using .SyncIgnore file and checking it that helps.

I think that's the case with those files, but I don't understand why certain music files aren't syncing. Perhaps it's their name or something being too long (classical pieces tend to have long names)?

There is no limitation in Sync for the length of files - unless the operating system or file system is limiting it. Can you get the debug logs from both Macs so I can take a peek why your files are not syncing? The name of some particular file which does not want to sync would also be good.
