qrbs Posted June 29, 2014 Report Share Posted June 29, 2014 My hosting provider (Bluehost) recently deactivated my account because I was running a "torrenting" script and generating "high CPU load." I use BT Sync to sync one folder of settings files, 680 KB total. Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening again? Here's what they sent me when I asked for the logs: Customer is running torrenting scripts./home2/**********/btsyncbtsync 24452 ********** 7u IPv4 831645339 0t0 TCP 69.195.93.33:38088 (LISTEN)btsync 24452 ********** 8u IPv4 864818483 0t0 TCP 69.195.93.33:46094->67.215.231.242:hbci (ESTABLISHED)btsync 24452 ********** 9u IPv4 831645350 0t0 UDP 69.195.93.33:38088btsync 24452 ********** 10u IPv4 831645352 0t0 TCP 69.195.93.33:ddi-tcp-1 (LISTEN)btsync 24452 ********** 11u IPv4 831647315 0t0 UDP 127.0.0.1:48741btsync 24452 ********** 12u IPv4 831647316 0t0 UDP 69.195.93.33:59524btsync 24452 ********** 13u IPv4 831641431 0t0 UDP 69.195.93.33:38764btsync 24452 ********** 15u IPv4 831641446 0t0 UDP 69.195.93.33:46601btsync 24452 ********** 16u IPv4 831641478 0t0 UDP 69.195.93.33:51602btsync 24452 ********** 17u IPv4 831641482 0t0 UDP 69.195.93.33:43909btsync 24452 ********** 18u IPv4 831641487 0t0 UDP 172.16.5.24:52276btsync 24452 ********** 19u IPv4 831641488 0t0 UDP 69.195.93.33:ssdpbtsync 24452 ********** 26u IPv4 831650925 0t0 UDP 69.195.93.33:sos Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Harold Feit Posted June 29, 2014 Report Share Posted June 29, 2014 Them calling BitTorrent Sync "Torrenting Scripts" indicates that their support and abuse monitoring staff are ignorant as to what BitTorrent Sync actually is.Sync, under proper operating conditions, for your size of a share will not actually generate high CPU load. They're probably doing something they shouldn't be.For reference, my system running sync on a celeron E3200 processor (dual core 2.4ghz) 1 [||||||||||| 9.2%] Tasks: 109, 178 thr; 1 running 2 [||||||||||||| 11.0%] Load average: 0.35 0.44 0.42 Mem[|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||3556/7959MB] Uptime: 8 days, 19:23:51 Swp[| 23/8226MB] PID USER PRI NI VIRT RES SHR S CPU% MEM% TIME+ Command25950 nobody 20 0 209M 45772 7908 S 0.8 0.6 3:44.37 php-fpm: pool www12986 harold 20 0 749M 212M 2748 S 8.7 2.7 2h44:59 ./btsync12991 harold 20 0 749M 212M 2748 S 8.5 2.7 2h11:15 ./btsync25561 harold 20 0 20796 2432 1432 R 0.3 0.0 0:00.45 htop17598 mysql 20 0 1150M 43816 4508 S 0.8 0.5 19:34.20 /usr/sbin/mysqld --defaults-file=/etc/mysql/my.cnf12989 harold 20 0 749M 212M 2748 S 0.0 2.7 3:29.49 ./btsync24434 harold 20 0 53260 3472 1524 S 0.1 0.0 27:27.06 ./utserverThis system has a total of 4 secrets, approximately 150k files, total space over 600GB being managed. I would honestly like to see the CPU usage of the btsync executable on their offending server. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
spYro Posted June 29, 2014 Report Share Posted June 29, 2014 The story with Hosting-Providers and torrents is an old story.In my opinion they think, you are using their Service to downloda and spread illegal files (movies e.t.c.) via Torrent.Just write them, that you are using a legal and normal application for file-synchronisation.And maybe you read through their terms and conditions, just so you can write them, where they maybe misunderstood your application. But file-synchronisation isn't illegal and it is done over millions of ways in the internet. spYro Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Harold Feit Posted June 29, 2014 Report Share Posted June 29, 2014 If they're going to block bittorrent sync, they need to block rsync too. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
spYro Posted June 29, 2014 Report Share Posted June 29, 2014 Just do clarify: They didn't block the traffic, they analysed it and suspended his account, if i understood him correct. Right, @qrbs ? Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
GreatMarko Posted June 29, 2014 Report Share Posted June 29, 2014 Just do clarify: They didn't block the traffic, they analysed it and suspended his account, if i understood him correct. Right, @qrbs ? Just to REALLY clarify, his account was suspended primarily for excessive CPU usage! Perhaps the OP could clarify the type of hosting package he was on? For example, many hosting providers suspend customers on basic "shared" hosting packages if they detect high CPU usage! Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
spYro Posted June 30, 2014 Report Share Posted June 30, 2014 As @Harold Feit mentioned before it seems not realistic to have high cpu load in this scenario But we can't say for sure. We would need a log of the cpu load as evidence, but i dont think they have this log. Maybe i am a little bit pessimistic about this, but i think that it is more likely they shut him down for general torrenting.It's like some ISP are still trying to block or slow down traffic from torrenting and P2P in general But yes, he should read the terms and conditions and his package-details :3 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
nellie4568 Posted June 30, 2014 Report Share Posted June 30, 2014 Probably better off rolling your own dedicated backup host for btsync. Backupsy is fantastic for this and they specifically allow BTsync. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
