Linux Ubuntu Upgrade 1.4 -> 2.0 Complete Uninstallation Issue

I had an old version (1.4) installation running in my ubuntu 14.04 installation. After I got a notification in the web-frontend to upgrade, I downloaded the new 2.0 version of Bittorrent Sync and tried to install it. As the old version was still installed I initially failed to do so. So I removed the Binaries (=the file I installed wtih 1.4), removed the btsync packages I found in the software manager and several hidden folders connected to Bittorrent sync (hope I got all). I could finally install the 2.0 version and start the webgui but seem to have misspelled the password I set up for the webgui as I now cant login to the localhost:8888 gui anymore.

I fail to remove the 2.0 installation in a way that i could after reinstallation setup the password again. After each re-installation I am asked to enter the password which I dont have.

Therefore my question:

  • How can I remove the bittorrent sync installation completely under ubuntu? (Folders so far removed the folder with the binaries and all hidden folders within. the hidden btsync folder one hierachy higher (user folder))
  • Or how can I reset the password for the webgui? (is there a config file? And where?)

Thanks a lot for helping me out!

  • 2 months later...

I encountered this same problem. I also killed the old btsync process and uninstalled the btsync packages in Synaptic.

I found the .sync folder in the top level of the directory_root path apparently has something to do with this. My recommendation would be to delete any existing sync folders and .sync folders under your btsync directory_root in addition to the settings.dat* files in your storage_path .sync directory (this will be in the directory containing your 'btsync' executable unless you explicitely set it to point someplace else in your config).

I ended up using the './btsync --dump-sample-config >btsync2.conf' command to create a config file to preset a few parameters before using './btsync --config btsync2.conf' to launch BTSync 2.0.

Along the way, I also removed the .sync folder in my storage_path, which caused btsync to create a new device ID that had to be linked to my other devices. I would try this as a last resort. The current Android app doesn't let me delete the defunct desktop device.

Hope this helps,

Curt

P.S. Note to the developers - you need better documentation and/or tools for device password recovery.

sepplr, to reset the password for WebUI login you need to delete settings.dat and settings.dat.old files in the storage folder. Storage folder located in .sync folder near binary btsync-file. Or it is specified in your config file.

If that doesn't help you, clear cookies and cache of 127.0.0.1  and localhost site (or another if you specified it in the config file).

curts, we already have the article with screenshots about it.
