Btsync: Link Type Not Registered For Firefox On Linux, "the Address Wasn't Understood"

In trying to host a scientific dataset at http://sensors.ini.uzh.ch/databases.html, we supplied a link to the readonly share in the form of a link like

https://link.getsync.com/#f=BodoRuckauerDVSOpticalFlowData&sz=66E7&t=1&s=GUXFTJAUSOTOPMS7PCN4USVEUZ4I7PUM&i=C4NBPBY7HSNZFP5FR3VJIFXYVG6A2Y44K&v=2.2.

This works fine on windows machines, but linux users running firefox, even after they download and run btsync, come to the dreaded message

The address wasn't understood

Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because one of the following protocols (btsync) isn't associated with any program or is not allowed in this context.

    You might need to install other software to open this address.

The address in the URL bar in firefox starts with btsync:

We can't figure out what to do about this. Could anyone advise us how to guide our linux/firefox users?

We did NOT get it to work by following the steps in http://kb.mozillazine.org/Register_protocol

settinnetwork.protocol-handler.expose.btsync to false did NOT work.

After changing this setting, and even after restarting firefox, we still couldn't open the link to come straight to the web UI.

What finally did work was to run btsync (which forked to the background), then opening the web user interface on locahost:8888, making a local btsync user, and then directly adding the btsync: link via the "direct connection" dialog.

This will be pretty cryptic to most users.

@tobidelbruck

Unfortunately, Linux version of Sync has very poor integration with shell. Therefore, links are not going to work. You are totally right, the only way to add link for Linux would be copy it and paste to "Manual connection" box.

No other workaround currently available - sorry.
