can i sync existing folders?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I want to sync the main documents folders on my laptop and desktop. The both currently exist and are largely similar. How do I sync these 2 folders together just by updating the differences between the two folders, rather than recreating one folder all over again on the other machine?

Thanks

Peter

Same question over here. I have started a 30 day trial of the PRO version to see if this does what I need and as @Peter asked I would like to sync a specific folder which exists on 2 devices currently.

I did a few tests and can't seem to get the folder structure right.

so on device a) I select the folder:  /mnt/sync/_data

on device b) the existing structure is: /Users/ovi/Documents/_data so when selecting the share link from a) do I point it to /Users/ovi/Documents/_data on b) or one folder up => /Users/ovi/Documents/

I'm confused if /mnt/sync/_data = /mnt/sync/_data/ = /mnt/sync/_data/* as with my 2-3 tries so far I have ended up with folders in all the wrong places, either /Users/ovi/Documents/_data/_data or the content of /mnt/sync/_data spread all out inside /Users/ovi/Documents/ instead of inside _data where it belongs.

I have now cleaned up the mess but will wait a reply before going ahead.

@ovizii first thing I'd suggest is that you change your folder synchronization mode in Sync to "Disconnected". That way you'll hen be able to specify the exact location you wish to sync each incoming folder to, rather than having them syncing to sub-folders within the "default" folder.

For more information on folder synchronization modes, please see: http://help.getsync.com/hc/en-us/articles/205457775-Synchronization-Modes

In relation to the location to select when syncing, you select the exact folder you wish to  sync to - not its parent. So if you've added the folder "_data" from "/mnt/sync/_data" on device A and you wish to sync to "_data" at  "/Users/ovi/Documents/_data/" on Device B, you'd add the location /Users/ovi/Documents/_data/ to Sync, and not the parent folder /Users/ovi/Documents/

Ok, thanks for that but I need some more help if you can.

so on my NAS which is one of the 2 devices, I enabled the Pro trial to test. Under "My Devices" I have now set new folders from other devices to disconnected.

What would be my next step? Add  "/mnt/sync/_data"  on my NAS?

Then what?

What do I do on my MAcbook (second device) do I add the code for the  "/mnt/sync/_data"  share or do I first somehow link these 2 devices (not sure I need that) Or do I create a share on the MAcbook for  "/Users/ovi/Documents/_data/"  ?

Sorry, this tool is very confusing and it changed significantly since I first tried it while it was in alpha/beta.

Hi,

Please assist further. I'm confused.

I have the app on my laptop and my desktop.

I want  my existing laptop folder C/Documents to sync with existing desktop folder D/Documents. Both folders already exist and hold about 150 Gb each. Both folders are largely identical in content, but have some small changes on each that I want to sync onto the other to reflect the most recent change/addition on either machine. I want read & write access on both machines.

So far, trying to sync from desktop (D) has resulted in an additional folder called 'Documents' being placed inside the existing C/Documents folder and the contents from D copied across to that, (with nothing going back to (D)). The folder on (C) was also described as read only.

Please can you tell me, step by step, how to achieve the mutual syncing so that (a) I don't have to copy across the full 150 Gb and (b) so that any differences on either machine will be updated on the other to the most recent change.

Thanks for your help.

Peter

This is expected, and the path is to be checked adjusted manually before actually connecting the folder. Please follow the step-by-step guide from here , this moment is payed attention to there.

Hi,

I've had enough. Been trying for 3 days now to perform a relatively simple operation. Your partial, very badly constructed and impenetrable help files are no help whatsoever. The interface is confusing and the process is awful! I've followed the step by step guides (which don't mirror the program) to no avail. Although not a 'techie' I'm a quite advanced computer user of many years experience but I can't get your program to work. Enough wasted time! Uninstalling. Goodbye.
