Although, Sync is using legitimate file access API to work with files, so the fact that Explorer crashes indicates some issue either in Explorer itself, or in one of Explorer extensions. This is the very first report about such a crash among Win 10 users, so I strongly suspect that it happens due to some explorer extension.
