magnawhale Posted February 22, 2013 Report Share Posted February 22, 2013 I recently installed Sync on two laptops (both running Windows 7) that I'll refer to as Laptop-A and Laptop-B. I did this while at home with both computers connected wirelessly to the internet (no ethernet cables). While at home trying to transfer all of my music from Laptop-A to Laptop-B both were maxing out at speeds around 1.0MB/s (which is slower than speeds I've gotten on other torrents, suggesting that the computers were connecting via the internet instead of automatically optimizing their connection through recognition of being on the same network. However, BIG DISCLAIMER, I'm not particularly knowledgeable about network infrastructure, so it's entirely possible that they just have no idea that they're on the same network. ANYWAY.... I closed the lid on Laptop-B and took it to my university's student center, where Laptop-B automatically joined the (very fast) campus WiFi network. However, the SyncApp did not resume syncing files, nor did it indicate that Laptop-A was connected (even though I left Laptop-A open, on, and downloading other torrents as per usual). After half an hour with no change I closed Laptop-B and returned home. When I opened Laptop-B at home it immediately resumed syncing with Laptop-A. Anyone else experiencing a similar problem? Anyone know how to fix it? Only being able to sync my laptops when they are sitting right next to each other pretty much defeats the purpose of SyncApp (the main selling point for me, incidentally, is being able to designate scattered folders to sync rather than having to put all files in one place like with Dropbox, GoogleDrive, or Microsoft SkyDrive). magnawhale Posted March 4, 2013 Author Report Share Posted March 4, 2013 quick update:I finally figured out how to connect my two computers directly via ethernet crossover cable (I don't even want to get into how complicated this got). Although I can now manually transfer files at 10MB/s, Syncapp still cannot detect the hardline local area network (it can only connect via WiFi (and even then it still seems to be routing data to the internet instead of just going through the router, based on the low speeds it is showing). rdebath Posted March 19, 2013 Report Share Posted March 19, 2013 One test I'd do with your two laptops is to connect ONE of them by wire (with wireless turned off) to your router.The problem is that current WiFi encryption forces the connection between the two laptops to go via the base station. With both laptops trying to fill the air and the base station trying to talk to both of them at the same time this can drop the available bandwith a long way.By my calculation 54Mbit/s becomes 1.5MBytes/s or less if there's anyone else trying to use the same channel.NB: Does the Uni network block UDP traffic ?
