  1. Hi guys,

The Synology version is far from user friendly... requires too much tweaking in the terminal that the average Joe (like me) can't entertain.

First, the community install will create a user id below 1024 which is not seen in the DSM UI... (that's the first problem, requires tweaking the passwd file to make the user ID above 1024)

    btsync:x:100:100:BitTorrent Sync User:/usr/local/btsync/var:/bin/sh

Second,  it is impossible to use a different folder than /usr/local/btsync/var/BTsync (That's the second problem, this system folder is not seen in the DSM... hence makes it difficult to access the files directly in the Synology) and moreover it is not possible to write elsewhere for example in /volume1/BTsync (BTsync beeing a share folder) nor it is possible to write in /volume1/homes/user_joe/BTsync

    So what do we need:

    1. Install would create a user in the DSM so that the corresponding rights to access files and shares can be managed for this particular user.

    2. Possibility to create a specific folder available with /volume1/homes/user01/btsync so that a user can "park" is BTsync stuff within his own user space

I am not a Unix guru and I have been trying to make it work this way for a week and could not succeed...

What do you think? Thanks for listening!

    Cheers,

  2. Thank you Jimmy and hurik

I am not a Unix expert so I am really struggling.

Jimmy, I have created a shared folder in /volume1:

    drwxrwxrwx    2 root     root          4096 Oct  8 23:12 BTsync_john

But damn again when I try to add a sync and ask BTsync to point to /volume1/BTsync_john I get the f$# same message! No right to do so!

Hurik I have tried to edit my passwd file but failed miserably.

I can't even make a backup copy (just in case) nor use the sudo mode... Sorry but I am close to zero in Unix skills...

    DiskStationJohn> cp passwd passwd.old

cp: can't create 'passwd.old': Permission denied

    DiskStationJohn> whoami

    admin

    DiskStationJohn> sudo cp passwd passwd.old

    -sh: sudo: not found

    DiskStationJohn> sudo su

    -sh: sudo: not found

    My passwd looks like this:

    btsync:x:100:100:BitTorrent Sync User:/usr/local/btsync/var:/bin/sh

    Help much appreciated.

    John

  3. hi jimmy

just went in and checked my /volume1/homes/user1/BTsync folder

seems that BTsync is already 777:

    drwxrwxrwx    2 superfly users         4096 Sep 30 09:16 BTsync

    but still doesn't work

When I paste /volume1/homes/user1/BTsync to add a new folder I have the "Don't have permissions to write to selected folder" error

However when I add a shared folder and use the default location it works :

    /usr/local/btsync/var/BTsync

    drwxr-sr-x    3 btsync   root          4096 Oct  8 02:19 BTsync

Obviously BTsync is coded to work on a folder that has quite different rights.

What's bugging me is if I use the default path then I can't access my sync'd files from the web UI and the FileStation

It would be so much better if I could select a user location instead of /usr/local/btsync/var/BTsync

    Any thoughts?

  4. I have issues with both versions 1.4.83-8 (updated automatically from 1.3.109-3 which was installed manually).

In both cases when I want to add a folder, I want to point to /volume1/homes/userxxx/BTsync, however when in homes I can't navigate any further. When manually typing the path, I am told I "Don't have permissions to write to selected folder"

It seems the BTsync app doesn't have the sufficient rights to write or access in homes.

    Any ideas???

    Cheers,  :)
