  1. You guys are selling a product, not a service. It should be a one time fee, not a subscription.

Couldn't agree more. I'm happy to pay a fairly high price for it, as well.

However, these days in software, Saas business models are considered much sexier than perpetual license models. Everyone wants recurring revenue. In the case of BitTorrent Sync, though, their decision to not offer a perpetual option means they will get $0 from me instead of $some.

  2. As has already been stated, there will also be a free version of Sync 2.0 which will improve "over what's available in version 1.4". So if you're already "rolling your own cloud", I see no reason why you won't be able to continue to do this with the free version of Sync 2.0 moving forward.

This is true, but as I stated, I do want to pay for premium features. I value the software. I'd love it if the company would give us an opportunity to purchase "lifetime" licenses a la Plex pass for around 3x the cost of a subscription.

  3. I'm not really happy about the subscription pricing. I understand it's better from a company valuation perspective, but I would really love a "lifetime" option. I think it's fair to set the lifetime pricing at 3x that of the subscription price. I get a lot of value out of Bittorrent Sync, and I love supporting good software. I'd pay $120 for sure. However, part of the reason that I "roll my own cloud" is to avoid subscription fees. If there is going to be no way to avoid the subscription, I'll jump to Pulse.

  4. I'm confused. Am I doing something wrong? I had BTSync working great for like 5 folders, and it still works just fine for them. Fast forward a few months, and I'm on this most recent version on all my machines.

    1) I go on my wife's computer, I add a new folder to sync.

    2) I copy her read / write key.

    3) I use a browser to get to my FreeBSD box and fire up the Bittorrent Sync WebUI.

    4) I add a new folder. I do this by clicking the middle icon of the two links in the upper right of the Web UI.

    5) I paste in my key. Then I create a new folder in my sync destination.

    6) I expect that the two folders are in sync.

    7) Status is listed as "Out of Sync" even though when I browse the folder on my NAS, I see the files are in there.

    8) Both machines show "1 of 1" peers attached, and one shows the NAS. The other shows the laptop. That makes sense.

    9) I drop a new file onto the mac. It doesn't show up on the NAS.

How was it able to do the initial sync, but it's not adding this new file? And why are my other folders still properly sync'ing?

  5. Feature request: Add use of Touch ID instead of passcode to open Sync would be awesome and time saving (like 1Password & Dropbox).

+1 ~ would be awesome to not only have TouchID but also to have 1Password direct integration via their API.

I wouldn't hold my breath, though. The bittorrent sync app has been VERY slow with updates, and it still doesn't support iPhone 6 / Plus resolutions or document pickers.

  6. I wish bittorrent sync would update the iOS crash to support the new iOS8 extensions like Dropbox. Now that the decentralized sync market is getting more competitive, this is something I NEED in order to do full round-trip file editing between Mac, Linux, and iOS. The first non-cloud, decentralized sync solution to do that will get my commitment. And I'm happy to donate / pay $ for that as well.

  7. For Linux (and FreeBSD) the webui is disabled by default for all interfaces except loopback (see link in change log - first message of this thread). This is for increased security.

Try running ./btsync --webui.listen 0.0.0.0:8888  to return to behaviour of v1.3.  You can set up listen in the config file as well. Consider the security implementation of enabling this.

Thanks for the note on this. Out of curiosity, if running on a LAN with no external visitors, what are the security implications of running the WebUI? What are the implications in general, especially if the WebUI has a password?

  8. Hi there!

I use FreeNAS right now, and I run BTSync in a jail. It works like a charm. i'm going to be gifting my parents a Plex Media Server. I'm in San Francisco. They're in LA. They can't rip movies. I can.

Thus, it makes sense for me to set them up with btsync so all my new media automatically gets sent to them after I rip them. When I add the storage to my jail, I add it as read-only. I don't want to accidentally do anything to mess with my media collection. I want it read-only. However, when I try to add it, I get the error from BTSync that it doesn't have write permissions. I would much rather get a *warning* letting me know that I can't add files with BTSync. When I rip media, it gets put in my collection via methods other than BTSync. I just want BTSync to send the files across the wire... I know I can make my parents' a read-only destination once I have the secret key, which I intend to do, but I really don't want this first BT node to be able to write no data either.

Obviously if I have to, I can go in and edit the permissions, etc, but I'd much prefer not to do that - thanks!

It is a known issue. T-Mobile USA throttling BitTorrent traffic intentionally. We are working to resolve this issue.

Eek! To be honest, I'm okay with a little bit of throttling... On my mobile device, I use it mostly for uploading work receipts and stuff. But they all-out blocking is a deal breaker! Just to prep my own expectations, are you working to resolve this w/ T-Mobile? Or are you working to obscure your traffic such that it can't be blocked / throttled? I switched to T-Mobile a few weeks ago to test out the lower pricing, but when the new iPhone comes out, I may have to switch back to ATT if BTSync is a no-go!

  10. Hey there!

I've recently discovered that my iPhone isn't sync'ing over cellular. I'm on T-Mobile USA, and it's pretty re-producible. It's as simple as toggling the wifi on and off. It can't even see the other devices online. If I'm on WiFi, it will tell me that there are 1, 2, or 3 devices it found. If I'm on cellular, it shows none. Is this a known issue? Or is it possible that my carrier is blocking? I recently switched from ATT, and I didn't have this problem on ATT. Thanks!

  11. I would love to see more information / better organization of both the "Devices" and the "My Sync" tabs in the BTSync UI.

For example, what does "My Sync" really mean? I think it should be called "Folders." There is a picture of a folder there so that would make it more consistent. Also, a little arrow to the left of every folder would be cool. If I click the little arrow, it would drop down all of the devices that are currently online and sync'ing that folder.

I think a similar structure should be put on the "Devices" tab. When I click the devices, I get a whole bunch of devices, but there are duplicate entries and they are sorted by folder, not by device. That's confusing, and I need to look at it kinda hard sometimes to verify that certain machines are online. I would much rather see a list, somewhat like the "My Sync" tab, but instead of folders, list out the devices. Then I could click an arrow to expand each device and see what folder(s) it's sync'ing. Would also be cool to have an icon or something to let me know what kind of machine it is... Windows? iOS? Mac? FreeBSD?

I hope you like my suggestions - great product. It continues to improve, and I'm excited to see what it looks like after some more continued development.

  12. Small bug report:

I use my iPhone a lot for tethering, and when you tether, it puts a blue bar across the top of the screen. Instead of the BTSync app correctly adjusting, it cuts off the bottom of the app. I believe this should be an easy fix.... Thanks! GREAT app! Thanks SO MUCH for supporting iWork files - huge plus for me...

The app works fine, but if I understand it, there are major limitations, possibly due to the lack of a file system in iOS.

I'd like to be able to pass files back and forth between my Mac and my iOS devices.  Edit on either and keep them in sync, without a cloud, purely P2P.

I can open an Excel file on the iPad from the BT app, but there is no way to save it back.  Am I missing something?  Did MS not support this, or what?

This is a 2-part issue. 1) Apple doesn't really have APIs to allow for good round-tripping of documents on iOS, unless you use iCloud, in which case it's supported. 2) Microsoft only support round-tripping of documents via OneDrive.

So basically... Microsoft is unlikely to change. This is their "hook." But even if they wanted to, they can't right now due to Apple APIs (or lack thereof) which I really hope come in iOS8.

  13. @hungarianhc,

Great. But if something crashes - I'd prefer to get core / crash dump, as it usually contains at least a call stack which can point us to the problem location.

If / when that arises, how do I get a core / crash dump on FreeBSD? Also, I THINK the issue that other people, including myself, saw was that the process continued to run but was unresponsive. In any case, it's behaving just fine right now!

  14. @hungarianhc,

BTSync can't sync apple's xattrs to one of your Unix machines. This is known issue, will be fixed in future releases, for now you can put appropriate xattrs to the .syncignore

Got it - I knew that, but that didn't seem to match the "hostname not found" log message, BUT... glad that's just the basic issue. As it's something that will be fixed eventually, I won't implement the workaround now. The FreeNAS box has been online for a few days without a crash... that's good - hopefully it never crashes :-). But if it does, the log output is going to a file, and I'll send that.

  15. What's with all the "hostname not found" error messages in my log?

As I understand, the UI of Windows client is not responding, and no actual sync is happening. 1 thing to test and 2 items to collect:

    1) try to install freshly released 1.3.93. It has couple of nasty crashes fixed, might be your case.

    2) If it still does not help - enable a debug log on your Win machine, make sure that "Not responding" gets there, grab the log file. Then collect a couple of process dumps (2-3 would be fine) with TaskManager.

That should be enough to find out what is happening.

    @unsignedint,

Thanks for the log, i'll get back to you when I have something. I guess I already advised to try another browser / clean cookies.

    @hungarianhc,

It means that the process does not crash but exists. Could you please to run it with --nodaemon switch and see it's output to the console?

Okay I'm going to grab the most recent version, and then I'll start it up, redirecting the output to a log file, and i'll report back if / when the issue happens.

  17. Hello,

i've updated from 1.2.91 (or somethng like this) to 1.3.87.

On windows 7, it's not reponding major of the time...

Seems to be running, but i can't acces on the screen, it's not responding.

On mac everything's ok. I've a lot og Go and folders and everything is re syncing after updated.

I wonder if this is the same issue that I'm having on FreeNAS, hence there being no *.core dump file. I don't know how to to tell if it's open....
