  1. Hi, I've been using Sync for years and it works great. I'm going to be replacing my main media computer and changing to a Synology NAS. I need to do a dump of multiple terabytes of data from the computer (Windows) to the NAS. I'm just wondering if setting up a sync between the two would theoretically be any faster or slower than just doing a copy/paste from within Windows. I know there are other options like Robocopy and stuff like that, but I just want so the fastest way to do this initial dump where I can just click Go and come back when it's done. Thanks.
  2. Hi, I just added a new machine to a folder I've been syncing to other machines without any issues. The new machine has been syncing since yesterday and seems to be working just fine. When I checked it this morning, the Status column says "Can't download file". However, there's no information about what file it thinks it's 'having issues with. There are no fancy permissions on the folder. The History tab shows nothing under Error, Warning, or Info. I checked the Source machine and it doesn't show any error message. Just the destination shows the message. The sync is still running, so whatever the error is, doesn't seem to be too important. Is there somewhere I can look to figure out what file is causing the problem and how I go about resolving the issue? I did a Rescan but it didn't seem to have any effect. Thanks.
  3. The 2nd machine is read only. The 1st machine is the Owner. So everything I put on the first machine should go to the second machine. The second machine never gets used so I don't think the files got manually deleted or anything like that. I just checked the box to overwrite so we'll see what happens. If it starts syncing, is there any way to view the queue so I can tell which actual files it's working on?
  4. Like I said, " If I create a new file, it shows up on the other side within a few seconds. However, there are folders already on the first computer that aren't on the 2nd one. " I just need to know how I tell the 2nd computer to refresh its list and realize that it's missing folders. Or do I need to undo the sync and set it up again from scratch so that it will inventory what it has and download what it's missing?
  5. Howdy, I've been using Sync for years to keep two folders in sync between two computers. I noticed today that not all the folders from one PC are making it to the second. If I create a new file, it show sup on the other side within a few seconds. However, there are folder already on the first computer that aren't on the 2nd one. Is there an easy way to tell the 2nd computer to refresh it's list and do a full compare to find the files it's missing and copy them again? Or is there any way to find out what's going wrong? I also noticed a strange icon next to the Sync icon on the folder. No idea what it means but I'm attaching a screenshot. Thanks for any help!
  6. I was finally able to figure it out. Someone the syncing got paused from the source side. No idea how. It'd be nice if the Sync client could show that one of its peers was in a paused state.
  7. Howdy, I'm replacing the computer I have all my media files on and figured I would use Sync to transfer the data between the two. I have a Movies folder and a TV Shows folder. I added them both to Sync on the new computer without any issues. Movies started syncing right away and chugged through until it was done. However, TV Shows just sits at 0% and never does anything. Both folders show 1 peer online and everything looks normal but the TV Shows folder just doesn't do anything. Is there anything I can check to figure out what's going on? It did sync the folder names over and that worked OK but it won't sync any actual files. I tried pausing and resuming which didn't help. I tried rebooting which didn't help. I also tried removing the folder and adding it back in which didn't help. It does show the total size it should be transferring but it just doesn't ever start. Thanks!
  8. OK. That's what I thought I would have to do. How does this affect a share that goes between a bunch of computers? I have 4 machines that all sync the same folder. If I "remove" that folder from one of them, move the files to the new drive, then add it back by getting the key from one of the other 3, does that add the moved machine back into the group with all 4 or do I have to make any changes to the other 3? Thanks.
  9. Howdy, I setup a sync pair but for some reason it was saying Read Only instead of Read & Write so I clicked Decline. I redid the link and made sure I chose Read & Write but now it automaticlaly denies the new client. How can I clear out the blocked list or something so I can make this sync work? Thanks.
  10. Hi, I saw some references to this for old versions of Sync but didn't find anything concrete for the current version. I have a folder at c:\users\me\whatever that's all synced up and working fine with two other computers. I added a 2nd hard drive to my computer so I want to move all the files and such over to the D drive. I'd rather not have to resync everything because it's 200+ gigs of stuff. Does anyone have any step by step instructions on what I need to do to make it work properly? Thanks!
  11. Howdy, I had computer A sync to computer B to act as a backup. Computer A died and I had to reinstall Windows. When I open sync on Computer B it says it's Read Only and I can't share it out back to computer A now that it's been reinstalled. What are the proper steps to make this work? Do I need to setup a new share on computer A and tell computer B to put it in the same folder it was going to last time? Will that just sync everything back to A where I need it? Thank.
  12. Howdy, I have a folder with a bunch of files that I need to share with a friend. I was going to share out the file and send him a link but I noticed the disclaimer that says: Once access is granted, it cannot be changed or revoked Does that mean once I share a folder I can never stop sharing the folder? That seems strange. Is that right? Can I just make a new folder a move the files and then delete the original one? I don't want to share the folder forever. Not sure if I'm misreading the warning or what that really means. Thanks!
  13. OK. So it's just the middle option that I'd rather not have happen. I'm sure I can work around that though. Thanks.
  14. I'm not on a machine where I have Sync installed or I'd just test this myself but hopefully it's an easy question for someone who knows I want to sync a folder on computer A to a folder on computer B (obviously). However, I don't want any changes on computer B to come back to computer A. AND I only want ADDs on computer A to get synced over. If I add something to A, it syncs to B. If I delete something on A, I don't want it to also delete on B If I add or delete something on B, I don't want that to do anything to A Can that be done? Thanks.
  15. OK, I unlinked them all and did them separate and now it works back like how 1.4 did which is what I wanted. I can now share a link and it asks me where I want to put those files on the second computer which is perfect. I don't think I'll need the ability to add a folder and have it just go automatically so I shouldn't need them linked together. Thanks!
  16. OK, that helps. So I think I'll just use 3 separate identitied to keep things nice and organized. However, the Moving Folders thing may give me trouble. I currently sync all our photos to a certian location on the C drive of the "server". I just added another drive to that machine and want future syncing items to go to the D drive now. I thought with 1.4 I could use the share link and then it would just ask me where I wanted to put it on the second machine. Will it do that if I set them to use separate identities? Or do I need to change the default folder to the D drive for new things and then add it in? I'd think it'd be much better if i coudl Right-Click on the share and choose an option like "Move sync folder to" or something to just manually say I want this folder to sync here and that folder to sync there. I guess I'll have to play around with it a bit.
  17. So I currently use Sync to copy all my photos between my laptop, my wife's laptop, and my "server" computer. Have been using 1.4 and it's been working fine. I just upgraded to 2.0 and have a couple questions. 1) I had been using all 3 of my computers as my computers so on the new ones I put in the long code so they are all listed as My devices. I'm wondering if I should have done that or if they should be under their own identities. 2a) I now want to also use this as a sort of Backup system. I added a folder to sync on my wife's laptop (Documents) and want to sync it to the Server computer. As soon as I shared it from her laptop it showed up on the server and on my laptop. I don't really want to see if on my laptop but I can't seem to remove it. If I choose to remove it says it will remove it from all the computers which doesn't seem to be what I want either. That leads me to the question up in #1. 2b) On the server computer, it automatically added the Documents folder but it coded it into the default location of BitTorrent Sync/Documents. I don't want it in that folder but I can't seem to find any way to tell it to start syncing it to a different folder instead. How do I tell the Server where I want it to store these files? Thanks!
  18. Hi, Brand new to BT Sync. I want to sync all out Photos from my wife's laptop to mine. I just installed the latest 1.4 version of BT Sync on both machines. Shared a folder and it setup the link OK. We are both at home on the same network so I assumed this would start cranking away. However, I'm getting speeds of anywhere from 0 to 20KB/s. Many times it seems to stop and says Out of Sync. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong or how to troubleshoot what the problem might be. I'm hoping it's not trying to upload files out of my house and back in via my internet connection but don't really know how to check this out. It currently says it will take 5+ years to complete the sync which is obviously messed up. One laptop is Win7 and one is Win8.1 if that matters. Any suggestions or info on what I can do to trouleshoot this would be much appreciated. Thanks! OK, as I was about to Post this all of a sudden my speeds jumped up to 3MB/s or more. Does the sync go incredibly slow if it's still indexing the files? We have 150+ gigs of photos so maybe that's what the problem was. I'll continue to monitor it and see how it goes.
  19. I want to be able to offload photos onto either laptop 1 or laptop 2 and have the files go to the other 2. The media computer just sits in the basement and doesn't do anything. So I guess I should just use r/w keys on all 3 and I should be good to go. Any major differences between 1.4 and 2.0 that I would want to consider using 2.0 for this? Thanks.
  20. Just looking for the best way to setup a sync between 3 computers. We currently use Microsoft's Synctoy to sync photos from Laptop 1 to my Media computer and then from the Media computer to Laptop 2. This is all manual and has to be done in 2 steps. I'm investigating changing this to BT Sync which I assume can connect these computers to each other. Does 1 computer have to be the "Master" computer or will they all be treated as separate devices. Mainly if I upload my pictures to Laptop 1 I want them all to go to Laptop 2 and the Media computer. Also, if I upload pictures to Laptop 2 I want them to go to Laptop 1 and the Media computer. Just not sure how this works when you have more than just 2 computers. Thanks for any advice.
  21. So, one other question. Since all my computers currently have the same files, can I just pick one to share, give the key to the others, and point them at the existing folders and with BT Sync figure out that all the files are the same and not do anything? Or should I delete all the files from 2 of the computers and let them sync them over from the master to get started?
  22. My wife and I currently use SyncToy to sync our photos between our two laptops and my media server that stores all my pictures, videos, music, etc. The way we currently do it is: 1 person downloads the pictures from the cameraThat person then runs Synctoy to sync the new pictures, deletions, renames, moves, etc up to the serverThe second person then run Synctoy to download the new files and other changes to their computerProblem is if both of us download pictures without syncing in between we then have person 1 syncs and uploads their changes, person 2 syncs and uploads their changes and downloads person 1's changes. Person 1 then has to sync again to get person 2's changes, etc. One main problem is this only works if we're at home since it's on our local network and it's a manual process to remember to run the sync. I'm thinking I can install BTSync on all 3 computers (or even just leave out the server since it's just the middle man) in order to make this automatic. Some questions are: How does BTSync handle if a file moves to a new folder? How does BTSync handle if a file gets its name changes? How are file deletions handled? How would this best work using the 3 computers or would I be better off to just use 2 and manually still use Synctoy as a 1-way sync to update the server as a backup every once in a whileJust looking for any opinionts on how to set this up or if it just won't work as well based on the changes, move, deletions, etc. Thanks for any advice!
  23. Howdy, I've been using the MS SyncToy for years to keep pictures in sync between my wife's laptop, my laptop, and our media PC. This works well enough but I'm looking for something I can automated and that just runs all the time. I think BT Sync would work well but had some questions. Is it possible to do a 3-way sync between the 3 machines? Would I have to pick one machine as the master and let the other two sync to it? If I have 3 PCs and #1 is the master and 2 and 3 sync to/from it, what happens if I add a file to machine 2? Does it sync up to 1 and then 3 sees it and it syncs down to 3 so all 3 end up the same? How does it handle moving files and syncing folders? If I move a file from folder 1 to folder 2, does it treat that as a delete and redownload or is it smart enough to just move the file where it lives? SyncToy is hit or miss in this area and many times it does a delete and an add instead of just a move or rename. Does anyone forsee any problems with doing it this way? I want the media machien to be the master backup so I'm wondering if I'd just do a BT Sync between the two laptops and then still use Synctoy to go to the media machine on a manual kickoff just in case something goes horribly wrong on oneof the laptops and the mess filters down to that machine. Any other advice, options, opinions? Thanks!!
