I had de text only interface due to css not loading problem too on Windows 8. The registry trick by setting the css mime type to text/css fixed the issue for me. I would be nice if the installer checked and set this value during installation. Also as a 10 years developer of applications on many platforms: I agree that depending on embedded IE is not the wisest choice and will keep giving weird issues like the ones in this thread.
