BeTheSync
Hi all, is the somewhere in the world wide internet, a (german language) document/page/site, which I can refer to understand how all the DHT thing is working within btsync? I read some about it, but I'm really not sure, if I understand while using btsync on 3 different machines (mac/unix/win) only for my private backup/sync pleasure. ;-) I'm interested in the following: Is DHT good or bad (and can it flip in special cases?) for only sycning my own private files (which nobody else in the world has a dupe from). And how does it look like, when most of the files, I sync between my private machines, are files that a lot of other btsync User might also have on their sync-servers, like documents from the web or something else (yt-videos, free mp3, images from wikipedia...) Thank you very much for linking me :-)
Harold Feit
Assuming your computers are connecting to each other already, adding DHT won't give you any benefits. Individual files are not shared. Entire directories are. The files synchronized in your secret are NOT synchronized to computers that don't have your secret.
plittlefield
I have a newbie question, and this thread seems the best for it. (great app by the way!) If I want to go about connecting from one office to another office what's the best way? Both IP addresses will be fixed. Things I am considering... * different or same ports* tcp or udp* through a tunnel or is traffic encrypted anyway Thanks in advance Paully Edited May 22, 2014 by plittlefield
Harold Feit
Different ports is fine Forward both TCP and UDP Traffic is encrypted anyway.

Harold Thanks for replying so quickly, and good news to all those answers! I have tested a sync on a LAN and one "just finds" the other, which is very neat. However, in a WAN scenario, how can I "fix" the IP addresses without the need for relays, DHT, etc or DO I have to use those things? I guess what I am trying to ask is can I set up the config so that it automatically "knows" which IP address to try? A bit like setting up a VPN where you know which end is where. :-) Paully
Harold Feit
If you want a config that automatically knows the IP, use DHT and/or trackers with relay use enabled.

Ah, I think I have found the web page on this... "Known hosts (folder settings). If you have a known host with a static ip:port, you can specify this in Sync client, so that it connects to the peer using this information." I take it that is in the MANUAL that I haven't read fully yet? ;-) Paully

So a useful situation for DHT would be, if I had an additional folder, which I would like to share with any machine who knows my secret and is not one of my own machines? Still dont understand the benefits of DHT inside btsync.
plittlefield
Ah, that'll be the "Predefined Hosts" option in the Preferences for a share! Sorry, a real newbie error. :-) Paully
Harold Feit
If you don't know the address:port combination or you have a prohibitively large number of computers to connect between, DHT would be the better option. Also, dynamic public IP address and moving devices could also cause problems without DHT.
plittlefield
All sorted. Many thanks for 'nudging' me in the right direction. I just didn't have time to read the manual today, but have now. All working fine with Specific Hosts and Ports. OK, where do we donate? Paully
