Issue with BTSync.

Version: 1.3.109

Computer1: existing Windows 7 pro 64bit C: D: K: real drives

C:\download

C:\Users\Administrator\AppData.Local.Microsoft.Outlook

C:\Users\Administrator\Desktop

C:\Users\Administrator\Documents

C:\Users\Administrator\Pictures

K:\BBSl-files

c:\Sohodox Databases

Netgear Dual drive NAS:

Created a Share:

NAS-BBSL\backup\BBSL.SYNC (BBSL.SYNC is the share)

Under BBSL.SYNC I created 7 sub folders that related to folders on Computer1.

C.download

C.Users.Administrator.AppData.Local.Microsoft.Outlook

C.Users.Administrator.Desktop

C.Users.Administrator.Documents

C.Users.Administrator.Pictures

K.BBSl-files

Sohodox Databases (should have been C:\Sohodox Databases)

Computer2:

Mapped a drive letter M: to the NAS-BBSL\backup\BBSL.SYNC

Installed BTsync on both Computer1 and Computer2

Computer2:

I launched BTsync and added each of the folders listed on the Netgear individually to BTsysc.

Computer1:

I launched BTsync and added each of the folders listed on Computer1 individually to BTsysc and used Copy secret from each folder listed in BTsync on Computer2 individulaly to folder lited in BTsync on Computer1.

The Sync appeared to be working so I left it over night.

In the morning when I went to look at the sync BTsync on both computers appeared to have the same amount of files listed in each of the folders.

Issue:

When I actually went to the folders on the NAS there were hundreds of folders in the list repeated over and over with Conflict. Conflict1 Conflict2 etc.

Some of the folders had multiple Conflict 1-252 and other just had a few conflicts and others had not.

What I did notice was there were no files in the folders. There are folders in the folders but no files so I am kind of panicking at this point.

I moved over to Computer1 folders and the same issue there is a mirror image of all the Conflict folders that are on the NAS.

Going through folder I do not see any files.

After a degree of panic I search further and I believe I find all my files.

There appears to be a .SyncArchive folder in each of the original folders on Computer1

Each of the .SyncArchive I think contains all the files and folder from each of the original folders I was BTsyncing.

Action taken:

On Computer1 I removed each of the folders from BTsync to stop any further syncing.

On Computer1 I created a folder .BTsync.errors in each of the original folder I was BTsyncing.

On Computer1 I copied the contents (all the conflict folders) to the .BTsync.errors folder.

I did not copy the .SyncArchive folder in there.

I then copied the contents of the .SyncArchive folder back to the original folder.

Summary:

I think I have all my files and folders back to their original locations.

Having said that, all the folders and files all have todays date on them, got to say that really sucks.

I had run a bunch of test prior to doing this set of syncs and they seemed to work fine so I do not understand the issue.

Both computers and the NAS were up working none of them were ever shut off during the sync process.

I do not have debug logging as I stopped the links because I needed to put the computer back to working order.

Help:

Do you have any ideas what happened and how to resolve this from happening again?

ibramall,

Conflicts appear due to letter cases. Probably on your Computer 2 with NAS mounted folder you had two subfolders with the same name but different lettercase. These folders would produce conflicts on Windows. Or you had a 'subfolder' on WIn and "Subfolder" on NAS which would also produce Conflicts on WIn.

Other causes are also possible: with composed/decomposed characters specific to certain languages (umlaute in German, e.g.)

So a solution here would be to make sure that all files have the same letter case when folders with files are added to BitTorrent Sync on different platforms. Also, make sure that there is no any other app or sule set to change the lettercases in folders/files/

ibramall,

Sorry, something gave me the impression that you Sync from NAS to Win7.

Please, write to syncapp@bittorrent.com and in your message:
1) put the link to this topic.

2) Include information on symlinks, if any, you have in the sync folders on Win7.

3) process specs of your NAS.

Thank you!
