  1. Hmmm...  I appear to also have suffered the same issue - Just realized all my folders on all my devices are now all in a "Disconnected" state, and I'm having to manually reconnect them all again on each device.

The total disconnect appears to have taken place around 5 days ago.

Using Sync v2.3.8 for over a month, so disconnect not triggered by any update. Also, not opened iOS app in the last week, so disconnect not caused by that either!

Very strange! ...I'll chase with the team...

  2. In addition to @nuttall's points; I'd suggest also checking with your university's IT/network usage policies as they may frown upon or even ban/block P2P traffic. If so, you may be unable to use Sync within your university (unless you can convince your IT/network admins as to the nature of Sync and your reasons for wishing to use it within your university environment)

So, my question is: is it possible to generate per-file keys in a shared folder so that, instead of creating one folder per file, I just share those single-file keys and share them?

No, it's not currently possible. Please consider adding your voice/vote/+1 to this thread in the Feature Request forum.

Should i rename thoses files or can i let them the way they are ?

The best advice - if you're syncing files between multiple operating system types - is to ensure file names only contain characters which are valid for file names across all operating systems.

For syncing to Windows operating systems from non-Windows OS's, that means ensuring none of the following characters are present in your non-Windows OS filenames: \ / : * ? " < > |

Also, pay attention to the letter case of file names. Some OSs will allow "TEST.txt" and "test.txt" to co-exist in the same folder as two separate files. Windows, however, would see these two files as the same, and cause a conflict when syncing.

  5. To link devices, please see this Help Center article: http://help.getsync.com/hc/en-us/articles/205457815

In relation to being able to access 127.0.0.1:8888 in IE11 but not in Edge; please check your proxy settings in Edge (More -> Settings -> View Advanced Settings -> Open Proxy Settings)

In relation to "running under Local Area Network" - do you mean you only wish to sync over your LAN? (in which case, please see this article) ...or do you mean you wish to run Sync as a Windows Service under a different account?

  6. @patoka The broken Help Center link within the software is currently being fixed, in the meantime, the correct link for the Help Center is http://help.getsync.com

In relation to being online and offline at the same time - is this in your "My Devices" window, or is this "per folder"? If it's the latter, it's possibly because you've disconnected folder A on device X, whilst folder B on device X remains connected. Therefore, when you view a folder A's peers on your other devices, device X will appear "online" for folder B, and "offline" for folder A.

    1) When I buy the licence do I need to buy one for both my laptop and desktop to keep them syncing or will one licence work for both? (this is the only sync I will use).

No, your license is "per identity" not "per device", therefore to sync you personal laptop with your personal desktop (or any other personal devices), you'll need a single license.

    2) Transfer speeds seem to be around the 600 - 800 kbps, units are connected via home wifi router (one wireless one ethernet) This seems very slow. Please advise?

Please refer to the Sync Help Center:

    Download/Upload speed is very slow

How can I improve data transfer/sync speed?

    3) Advice for syncing pre-populated folders includes instruction to use 'disconnected' mode on computer 2, can  change this to 'synced' after setup as disconnected (folders only I think) is of no use to me?

I think you've mis-understood what a "Disconnected" folder is. This refers to its initial state when first added to sync, once you then "connect" the folder, it will continue to sync as normal - it doesn't mean it's permanently disconnected and will never sync!

    Please see: Synchronization Modes

  8. This doesn't sound like a Sync-related problem. It sounds more like an issue with Windows filetype associations on your PC B. Try right-clicking one of your excel/word files on B and select "Open With", and make sure you select the correct Office application accordingly (ticking the "Always use this app to open files" option)

  9. Sync already has a form of "version control" through files saved to a folder's hidden .sync/Archive folder.

i.e. make changes to a file named "test.txt" on a given device and when changes sync to other devices, the current "test.txt" file on those devices will first be moved to .sync/Archive and renamed to "test.1.txt". Make more changes, and the file will be moved and renamed to "test.2.txt", etc.

    See: http://help.getsync.com/hc/en-us/articles/204754239-Does-BitTorrent-Sync-support-versioning-

...so Sync does have "version control", however, this would unlikely offer protection against ransomware which encrypts certain file types, as versioned/archived files in .sync/Archive still retain their original extensions.

To prevent propagation of ransomware infected files between devices, you could consider read-only syncing, rather than read-write syncing.
