Juice370
Whenever I add a new folder to the web gui (linked to Synology NAS) it's added as Read & Write only. So when I subsequently link the destination folder, this only accepts the Read & Write key. How do I add folders as Read Only, so if I edit the info in the destination it does not edit the NAS source. Thanks a lot.
trevellyan
How do I add folders as Read Only, so if I edit the info in the destination it does not edit the NAS source. If the NAS is the device that you want to have read-write access, then the simplest thing would be to set the folder up on the NAS first. From there, you will be able to get a read-only key to use on another device.
Juice370
Thanks for your response. That's exactly what I did. But when I enter this NAS (Read Only) key into the PC (Destination) it asks for a read-write key and won't accept the read only key. Any further ideas? Thanks
trevellyan
Are you using the latest version? Is the destination folder empty? I think some versions won't let you use a read-only key if the destination isn't empty. Exactly how does Sync respond when you enter the read-only key? Juice370
I have the latest version on my PC, but on the Synology NAS the package version is different to PC. Could this be the issue? All other settings and the set-up are as you advise. Cheers
trevellyan
Different versions might cause a problem. I'm still curious to know exactly how Sync responds when it refuses to accept the read-only key, since this is something I haven't seen. RomanZ
@Juice370The versions difference should not cause such error. Could you please provide a screenshot of the error?
Juice370
Apologies for the delay. What am I doing wrong?
trevellyan
Are you by any chance attempting to use nested folders, i.e. trying to sync a folder that's inside another synced folder? Sync only permits that when the folders are read/write.
Juice370
This is the process I use: Activate Synology NAS BTSync package > In web admin add NAS shared folder > copy key > in local PC BTSync add local destination sync folder > add copied key from NAS shared folder to PC > Sync. Maybe this process is wrong?
trevellyan
I see nothing obviously wrong with the process you described, but it doesn't match your screenshot. The dialog you posted is for updating a key for an existing folder. Have you tried removing the folder from Sync on the PC, then using the Enter a key dialog to start over? Juice370
I must be doing something wrong in the process. Surely I have to create a remote folder and a local folder and then add the same key to both folders. Is it done differently than that? Do you create the remote folder, get the key and only then create the local folder and add the key in the one action. Can you not add it to a local folder created before? trevellyan
The folder can exist on the local machine, but it shouldn't already be set up in Sync.
RomanZ
@Juice370Thanks for the screenshot, this is a known issue. You can't change RW folder to RO. You can add folder as RO using appropriate Link from PC, or remove the folder and add it with RO key via "Enter key" function.
Juice370
But I'm syncing from Synology NAS to PC, not vice versa. So I guess it can't be Read Only the way I was trying?
RomanZ
@Juice370I guess you got confused with the "Add folder" button. You are "Add-ing folder" on both your NAS and PC, and later trying to update NAS key to read-only, right? You need to follow different scenario. Add folder on your PC, then "Share" it to NAS (or simply copy read-only key). PC will produce the link (or you copy key) which you need deliver to NAS. On NAS click Cog icon, then "Enter key" function and paste your Link or key there, choose the folder. In this case you'll add it with RO permission. Juice370
Yeah I think so. This would mean copying everything from original folders on NAS to a New folders which is a bit daft, and with 5TB of data would be too much faffing about. Thanks for the input anyway, appreciate it.
