Syncmade, The Cloud Add-On For Bittorrent Sync

Syncmade

Recommended Posts

Today we are proud to introduce to all the BitTorrent Sync community a new product we have just launched: Syncmade (https://syncmade.com).

Syncmade allows you to add a cloud presence to BitTorrent Sync without the hassle of purchasing a server and configuring UNIX-based BitTorrent Sync on it. Such cloud presence will allow you to keep your files online 24/7 while at the same time boost transfer rates by adding a 1Gbps peer to your BitTorrent Sync network.

Syncmade brings competitive advantages for general users by offering cloud geography, or the option to select where the files should get hosted among various companies and datacenters around the world (with adjusted pricing). Syncmade finally allows you to make sure your files stay within a certain jurisdiction or under the indirect management of a certain company.

Syncmade is also great because it allows you to store only the encrypted secrets associated with your folders (either by generating some for you or by letting you input your own). This will turn the cloud space into a ‘zero-knowledge’ capacity where only you will be able to decrypt the files.

Finally, Syncmade is beautiful and secure. It comes with latest SSL standards and perfect forward secrecacy principles in mind. It is built with state-of-the-art HTML5 techniques, making it Retina-ready and compatible with any device, desktop or mobile.

You can take a look at Syncmade @ https://syncmade.com/ and learn more about our SaaS @ https://syncmade.com/learn

We will be happy to hear any feedback you may have about our project.

We have a long roadmap that already involves increasing presence in many more datacenters/with more companies throughout the world, increasing the size of our free package, decreasing the price of our cheapest one, fully developing the web-based file manager and launching several disruptive features we already have in mind.

If you are deciding to give us a try, open a support ticket and tell us that you are coming from this article, we will double the virtual space you have, either it is free or paid.

Best personal regards to each and everyone,

Paul HUSTIN

Founder of Syncmade

and the Syncmade team (Maxim, Agnès, Pauline, Taty, Wayne & Steve)

Considering the discussions of the BTSync EULA with regards to commercial use, I'm finding mixed messages at the moment. People are coming up with great ideas, commercial and otherwise, but there seems to be a mix of business users being told they can't use BTSync ("just wait for Sync Enterprise!") and then feedback that suggests we can. The testing I've done with my personal and family data has been promising but I'm loathed to do anything commercial because of the confusion.

Cool project built on our API!

Thanks for your support!

As far as Syncmade is concerned, the current agreement is that it does not target any enterprise user. As long as it is a SaaS for the general consumer, it perfectly complies with Sync's terms. In other words, this is not what the consumer makes with Syncmade that matters, but what he or she represents or registers as, a simple consumer and not a business or organisation.

What is your project like by the way?  :)

Looks like Syncmade has gone offline.... http://syncmade.com/

and blames BitTorrent Inc. for it... :-(

From their website:

Farewell, folks!
Over past months, we’ve attempted to build the first solution that lets you synchronise your data with or without the cloud, with complete overview of where your files will end up being hosted. Our product was built around BitTorrent Sync, the decentralised file synchronisation solution.

Sadly, this software still has bugs which make it hard to maintain our services without accessing the source code. Most disappointingly, BitTorrent Inc. has never taken the time to answer our inquiries, let alone consider marketing partnership or help us get funded. We have no choice but to take our project offline, at least for the time being.

We are keeping our product around and our domain name online just in case BitTorrent Sync improves and/or BitTorrent Inc. begins showing consideration towards its API developers.

To be fair though, BitTorrent Sync has yet to leave "beta", so whilst its great that others are coming up with all these ideas, it's worth bearing in mind that because Sync is currently in "beta" things can - and do - change during the course of development.

If developers can't accept and/or keep up with that, then, yes, it's probably best that their projects are put onto the "back burner" until they either have the time/resources needed to maintain their own projects during the "beta" phase of Sync, or until Sync itself leaves "beta" and becomes "stable".

In the meantime, a number of other developers are currently offering their own "cloud storage services for Sync" (not affiliated with/endorsed by BitTorrent Inc)

This is an interesting and somewhat unfortunate development.  Although it appears that it's already too late (syncmade.com 404's for me now), I would like to invite Syncmade to discuss the bugs that are prohibitive to them or let me know who they attempted to contact at BitTorrent in an effort to get questions answered or to partner with us for marketing purposes.  In my time working on Sync, I haven't seen a single inquiry from the Syncmade team - and as Sync's Developer Evangelist, any concerns Syncmade had would have been a top priority for me!  The same goes for any and all other Sync API developers out there - got a question or concern?  I'm here to help.

I have posted numerous calls for projects/papers so that projects like Syncmade can be featured on the BitTorrent blog/elsewhere (like Wired!) and have gotten great responses.  Here are a couple examples:

Forum Post - Call for Blog Topics

Blog Post - Sync Dev: Q&A with the Creator of Sync's Linux Desktop GUI Package - check out paragraph 1:

I’m constantly impressed by the variety and depth of Sync API projects out in the wild and aim to highlight some of these projects going forward.  If you are working on or have built something awesome using the Sync API – tell me about it!  Do you know a a great Sync API developer that you’d like to see interviewed here?  Let me know!

And last but certainly not least, Jack Minardi and Jon Seymour - developers buliding on the Sync API - got some great coverage in Wired just by having a chat or five with me about what they were building and providing their time to answer questions for Ryan Tate @ Wired:

BitTorrent Sync Apps Offer Escape From Big Brother

So, I'll say it again - are you working on something awesome that's built on the Sync API?  Is there something about the API that's creating a blocker for your project?  I want to hear about it and I want to get you sorted out and drive traffic/attention towards your project!  Find me here on the forum, on Twitter @aaronliao, or via good old email - aaron [at] bittorrent [dot] com.  Lets talk!
