Synology Nas Isn't Working

Recommended Posts

Interesting Songolo - I wonder what version of the DSM software you were using?  I have customers in Spain and the UK and we have absolutely no problems at all using Cloud station both between the Synology NAS boxes and to various PC's - I have had zero errors and no problems at all with the forums or setting things up.  Perhaps I have a newer release (5.1) of the software to you?  I only have 6 users in my office also using the same data on the NAS as a server and it works very well - and as a print server, and as a photo server to the outside world for my friends and family to share :-)  all in all I am extremely pleased with it and now I have started using it I cannot for the life of me see why people would want to use BTSync, but I guess if you have had problems in the past you may well be put off.  Not sure what bugs you have encountered with Cloud Station, I have installed on my phone, my PC and my iPad with no problems at all.  Yes, the usage of server space if you don't disable the versioning is quite crazy, but I have this turned off as I have two disks in RAID format and I backup the data with versioning to a different drive off site (using freefile sync on a batch file running automatically when we are all sleeping)  It has been pretty simple to set up for sure - as I have mentioned in other threads on this forum, I am a user, not a software writer, so have zero experience in code and have zero desire to learn!

I've got the same problem here.

DS713+ running DSM 5.2-5655 Update 2 and Sync 2.0.120-1.  DS713+ is Cedarview.

I am running the free version currently.  I was previously using 1.4 successfully for many months and it worked flawlessly.  I then uninstalled and installed version 2 but left the 1.4 folders in place.  The sync worked perfectly.   I then didn't like the idea of them being 1.4 folders, thinking I was missing out on something, so removed them, and added 2.0 folders.   The PC immediately, quickly indexed 154GB of data on one of the folders correctly.  The NAS started indexing its folders and for the 154GB folder got up to about 745MB and stopped for days .... so I disconnected and removed the share, then removed the .sync hidden folder on the NAS drive and added the folder again ... and it's got up to 35MB and won't index any more.

I've logged a ticket with support who I am now awaiting a further response to their request for debug log files.

I'm thinking I may go back to 1.4 on the PC as it seems this could solve things.

I cannot for the life of me see why people would want to use BTSync,

1, Cloud Station doesnt allow you to sync sub folders, it can only sync the main shares.

2, I didnt think you could connect more than 2 Synology devices together? (we have 3).

3, The BTSync protocol is far superior and faster than the Cloud Station

… and you can use it on more platforms, c.f. a server on a shared host.

@NNois, @pattulus

I suggest checking which version of glibc library your NASes have. I suggest it is 2.3 - which does not support inotify and therefore Sync can't receive timely notifications from OS.

It's not even 2.3, Roman.

$/lib/libc.so.6 --versionGNU C Library stable release version 2.13, by Roland McGrath et al.Copyright (C) 2011 Free Software Foundation, Inc.This is free software; see the source for copying conditions.There is NO warranty; not even for MERCHANTABILITY or FITNESS FOR APARTICULAR PURPOSE.Compiled by GNU CC version 4.6.3.Compiled on a Linux 3.2.48 system on 2015-02-16.Available extensions:	crypt add-on version 2.1 by Michael Glad and others	Native POSIX Threads Library by Ulrich Drepper et al	BIND-8.2.3-T5B
What version is needed?

If this is the problem I see only one solution for users who don't want to tinker with their NAS:

Report this to Synology, so that they update their glibc library so that we have inotify support.

I think it's also in the best interest of BitTorrent to ask Synology to perform an update. It's good for both products. By the… dear forum members, you should report it, too.

PS: I still can't add an avatar here. Tried many browser, tried the Gravatar and manual way.

Hi pattulus, I'm not into linux at all, but 2.13 is actually newer than 2.3:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_C_Library

(2.5 = full inotify support)

The glibc version might depend on the installed linux version though. This is not the same on all Synology architectures, see:

Right. 2.13 should be newer than 2.3. Thanks for the hint with version 2.5 starting to support inotify.

I have to look into what glibc version the Linux installation on my DS412+ currently has. From the linked page it looks like I'm on "x86 : 3.10.35 #5532".

I'm tempted to manually update, but I like how everything runs smoothly now. I like my NAS kind vanilla, for custom scripts and so on I have my shared host. So I might sit this one out and wait until Synology updates their Linux distribution.

I haven't really checked which glibc my the custom Linux version of Synology runs. I only did a quick "uname -a":

Linux DiskStation 3.10.35 #5565 SMP Mon Jun 8 16:47:08 CST 2015 x86_64 GNU/Linux synology_cedarview_412+

Anyway, I found an older discussion in the Germany Synology board from 2012 with 2 "solutions":

Solution 1 => chroot + install Debian

Solution 2 => compile a more recent version here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/dsgpl/

Needless to say that both are time-intensive and needlessly complex. I'm still in favor of contacting the support regularly. It worked for the Plex glibc update. It should work for Sync, too.
