"selective sync" is already a "per folder" option in the Pro version - i.e. you can turn selective sync on or off for each folder you add

If your neighbor downloaded Sync from an official source (i.e. getsync.com), then this will be what's known as a "false positive". Please see the Virus Total scan for BTSync_x64.exe (2.3.1.259) here. As you can see Symantec (Norton) finds the file clean. The same is true of the 32-bit version (BTSync.exe)

Encrypted folder clarification
GreatMarko replied to kreischweide's topic in Sync General Discussion
Encrypted folders use more resources (memory + CPU) than "standard" folders do. For more information on folder types, please see this Help Center article. -
What's the total number of files you're syncing? ...bear in mind that Sync requires approx 0.8-1.5Kb of memory per file it's monitoring (the exact amount depends upon the actual length of the filename/path)

Adding Another Computer.. Must Come From Original?
GreatMarko replied to anotherusername's topic in Sync Troubleshooting
You can copy your Pro license from any of your devices - just go to Preferences (cog icon) -> Licenses -> Copy. Also, assuming all your devices are syncing bidirectionally, then there's no such thing as a "master" -

Folder Migration? (Regular -> Encrypted folder type?)
GreatMarko replied to unyi3lding's topic in Sync General Discussion
On your 3rd party nodes, you'd need to remove the "regular" folder from Sync and re-add it again using the corresponding Encrypted key/link. -
2.3.1 hasn't yet been pushed via auto-update - it is however available for update via the "Check Now" update link in the Preferences dialog, or you can - as you've done - download a full installer from getsync.com. This is all outlined in the pinned "Latest Desktop Build..." thread. It's likely that you have another web service already running/listening on port 8888. You'll need to place a config file specifying a different WebUI listening port, in your %appdata%/BitTorrent Sync Service folder. This should be named "sync.conf" and contain the following: { "webui" : { "listen" : "0.0.0.0:8888" } } - change "8888" to a port that's not in use (the 0.0.0.0 ip means sync will accept connections to the WebUI from any IP) Then restart your Sync service

This is your "identify" - i.e. the name you want your device to appear as on other people's devices you share folders with. It should be the same for all your own devices that you wish to link together under the same identify. Please see: http://help.getsync.com/hc/en-us/articles/205457815-Sync-Private-Identity-Linking-My-Devices Once you choose a name for your identity, you won't be able to change it again - please see this Help Center article: http://help.getsync.com/hc/en-us/articles/206163443-Can-I-change-the-name-of-my-Sync-identity-

The forum hoster had said it was impossible to do a redirection just for Sync topics from the original forums to our new home here - so we've now implemented our own redirct, so links pointing to sync topics over in the old forums should now automatically forward visitors to the correct place here!

Converts a Read&Write Share to Read Only
GreatMarko replied to megamorot's topic in Sync General Discussion
Assuming the folder's contents are already identical, you can simply remove the folder from Sync, and then add it back again using a Read Only Key/Link instead. Sync will index the folder, but nothing should transfer. -
[Solved] BT Sync & Konica Minolta copiers going offline
GreatMarko replied to tmeisel's topic in Sync Troubleshooting
The issue will be with your copiers not correctly implementing uPnP, see also: -

Let's put it this way (using Windows as an example); Windows 10's EOL (End Of Life), is nearly a DECADE away. If BitTorrent Inc went bust tomorrow, you'd still be able to run the latest version of Sync 2.3 on Windows until October 2025 at the very least! Plus, it's highly likely that whatever OS Microsoft then goes on to replace Windows 10 with will be backwards-compatible with Win10 applications. Therefore, concerns over BitTorrent Inc going bust and/or the "discontinuing" of BitTorrent Sync meaning you can then no-longer use the software, are not really realistic prospects.
-
Decrypting without Sync is not possible. However, Sync is "decentralized" - i.e. it doesn't rely on BitTorrent infrastructure or an internet connection in order to function. You could install Sync on devices within your local LAN, and they'd sync even without any external internet connection. Therefore, even if BitTorrent Inc were to go bust, Sync wouldn't suddenly just "stop working" - you'd still be able to use it

Yes - by checking the latest pinned "Latest desktop build..." thread at top of this forum. The latest version is currently 2.3.1, however - as mentioned in the topic starter - this isn't yet available via auto-update. The latest build available via auto-update is presently 2.2.7. The latest build available via manual update is 2.3.1. 2.3.1 will likely be pushed via auto-update in the coming days/weeks.

Sync uses a "variation" on the BitTorrent Protocol. Specific protocol details have not been published.
-
Folks, as Mozilla have now confirmed that Firefox OS will no longer be developed, it's highly unlikely that a version of Sync which runs on this soon-to-be-defunct platform will be developed. Sorry
-
Surely the easiest solution is to add the folder you wish to share to your copy of Sync, and then in the UI select "share" on the folder, generate a sharing link and give/send the link to your Grandma Your Grandma would simply click this link, and will be prompted to install Sync, after which she'll then be able to sync with your folder.
-
It's a limitation of the protocol.

Yes, you can right-click on the system tray icon and select Pause/Resume Syncing - this will affect all folders, so you don't need to pause/resume them each individually
